Triton Question...
 

i was wondering if the triton (extreme probably), has good potential for a nice distorted guitar sound to program. anyone know? thanks.

The OD/HiGain Wah MFX/IFX is one of the best I've ever tried...it does extremely well for heavy distorted organs! I don't know if the samples of distorted guitars work well, never tried them (I play mostly Dream Theater covers and with my group I use mainly church organ, a couple of leads (monster and saw/portamento) and some synth brassy/organ sounds...uh and I almost forgot my "Time Shaft" patch based on the Nord Lead CS patch of the analog series and piano, harpsi...ok I use a lot more patches) nor had the need for them...the guitars are hard to emulate on a synth, you should surrender to the fact you need a guitar player :).

im not too familiar with what a "distorted organ" sounds like. can that be anything close to a dist. guitar? could u give an example of a DT song maybe to where i can hear JR playing it? thanks.

As far as the Triton Extreme goes, it has the standard OD/HiGain Wah IFXs, but it also includes a for-real onboard tube output, which can be naturally overdriven, as opposed to using a digital effect.

The problem with the guitarsound is not the Triton's Effects :), but the source of the sounds (Waveform) and the way you play it. Especially rhythm-guitar parts are hard to play/sequence. The best "powerchord" guitar-sound i've ever had was with the weirdest setup.

I put my Yamaha SK10 string-ensemble trough the Triton's effects. With a good distortion/ampsim and a little ambience (reverb or delay) this made the fattest guitarlike powerchord-sound i ever heard. Even with a wah it was still quite fat! Nice thing about the SK10 as a source is that you have some sort of "drawbars"/faders that control different octaves of the orgen/string/brass sound, so you can ajust the harmonics in the "guitarsound" to make it more reallistic, even feedback-like effects are possible with these sliders. And the waveforms (organ - string - brass) all differ in rawness, on a distortion this has alot of effect.

Playing simple notes on a very clean sine-like waveform with some octaves makes a beautifull cutting-through-the-mix lead, while the more raw waveforms like string are great for an "Alan Morse"-guitarsound. Raw and edgy :).

Oops, this made a longer story then i intended, but maybe you find it usefull. Has anyone else experimented with a synth-substitution for the distorted guitars in a song???

Check out the begining of Erotomania... KevMo, now JR uses a distorted organ.

oh, so thats what it sounds like...thats a pretty cool sound btw, ive always liked it....

Does that mean it has a better sounding dist. guitar than others?

It's a sync sound layered with a heavy distortion organ, but I think the organ layer is secondary. If you hear CCD2000, in the Erotomania/PS/UM medley, the sound JR uses is quite more digital and sync-ish than an organ sample.
