Okay, here's what we're going to do:

If you want a midi - request it here. Don't make another thread - that's what this sticky thread is for.
If you HAVE a midi - send it to me - I'll host it for you.

If you want to *gasp* Transcribe something yourself, here's some tools that you may or may not find to be helpful:

This is a winamp plugin - it's design will slow music down without changing the pitch. Great for slowing down passages that are hard to hear or are too fast.

If you were getting serious about it and didn't mind paying a little$, then check this out:

Great software as well - the ability to loop a section REALLY helps you hear stuff you didn't before.

Also, check this:

This is a vocal remover - It normally removes vocals, but what it ACTUALLY does is takes the stereo channels, and then reverses the phase leaving only the background image of sound... This can be used to removed electric guitar leads, singing, or if you're having trouble hearing something in the background, this is a MAJOR help. *especially if you can't hear what's happening behind a solo*

These are both for winamp and will work on most systems. You may or may not need the older version of winamp which is available here:

In any case, this is a great way to get started making midi files.

Heck - If you get one STARTED and even if you don't think it's very good, POST IT ANYWAY!! There's a good chance someone will look at it, and say "Wow, I can fix a few things and it's that much better!"


So there you have it folks: Give it a try.

One other technique that I like to use:
If you have a multi-track recording program like Cubase or Sonar or Cakewalk, etc.. You can actually LOAD the mp3 file or wave file, and then make another midi track beside it. Then what you can do is sync the time by finding the tempo it's at, and then when you transcribe, you can hear if the notes aren't the same or if they are.

I usually have my midi's synched to a file somewhere, but that also promises that it's going to be that much closer to the original :)

I'm working on a very detailed midi of Overture 1928 (all instruments included), but I have some problems figuring out the second synth solo. Can anyone help me with this?
I'm expecting the midi to be finished in a couple of weeks.

Actually I start the run on Bb. I play it a little different than Jordan does. I do it like this: (16th sextuplets)

Another hint which I learned from Jordan Baker was the panning aspect of songs. Right and left channels may have different tracks assigned to them (e.g. keyboards to the left, guitars to the right), so the trick is to eliminate either channel to hear a certain instrument better.

I always work completely with the sample of the song (which I extract with Nero Burning ROM) and not with the CD (it would kill the CD player in medium run). There is lots of cheap shareware or even freeware samplers offering great playback features. One example of a good shareware is the following one:

The best feature about this tool is that you can quickly assign any playback zone by left and right clicks. This makes playback considerably easier - no more looping necessary (even though it's possible of course).

The more input (knowledge about harmony/rhythm, experience, software tools, etc.) you are able to provide at the same time, the higher the output will be from point of view quality and transcribing speed. It's a real power to be able to transcribe yourself because you no more depend on others. Plus, it considerably increases your analytical skills when listening to a song, which is absolutely required for your own songwriting and improvisation.

this thread was a great idea! i actually didnt know of any resources like the ones you mentioned, as far as slowing down the tempo without lowering pitch, and the other sites sound like very good ideas. im planning on trying some RPM stuff. i'll post it when i get it done. one setback is i kinda suck at rhythm. well, figuring out rhythms and time sigs right off the bat. i saw your transcription of Over the Edge and i was wondering how the crap you figured out those rhythms and time changes. is there a source to help me learn more on hard rhythms? i think it will help in the transcribing of music as well as creating origional stuff. thanks.

Sorry to disappoint you but there is no really substitute to practice and counting. Use Jordan's Rhythm section of the OC and the Keyboard Wizardry video to help you further. It's important to learn to count out loud and to learn about microbeats.

The better you become at playing, the better you will be at transcribing.

Well, I think UNDERSTANDING is what makes it work. Knowing how beats work, how they're put together, etc.. is the first step to recognizing what the sound/beat is made up of.
The first step for me was measuring out the whole song by time signature. I'd count and count and count until there was a change, see how many bars went by and mark it out :)

In something like 12/16, you think about how it can be broken up. *using 2's and 3's*

33222

So it's like, 1! 2 3 4! 5 6 7! 8 9! 10 11! 12
the ! represent the beat. This is an example I just used but you can figure out MANT time sigs using this method. *Or at least break it down so you can understand it better*

Something like 19/16 would be in 2's and 3's also, so maybe like this:

3 3 3 3 3 2 2 = 19
obiously there are other variations in there, but basically that's it. If you think you hear a group of 4, then it'd be 2 2's.

That's pretty basic, but it certainly helped me understand how to count my way through it and also understand what I'm playing when I play it

Well, I think UNDERSTANDING is what makes it work.

You will see in a few years/months; there will be figures for which you now used time stretching to slow down speed because, even though you understood them perfectly, you could not seize them at original speed, and for which you will then no more need to use time stretching. You may understand a rhythm, and it will help you to transcribe IF you slow down speed (unless it is already sufficiently slow for you). Mastering a rhythm will bring you way further than only understanding it. While it is relatively easy to transcribe weird time signatures, it is very difficult to transcribe rhythms you don't know. For an example, check out Jens Johansson's Fission album, the song with the Hammond intro (I think it's nr.6) - very hard to transcribe for anyone who understands but isn't able to play.

Beware Enigma that you already have a quite high level of playing and very probably understanding. That makes it easier for you than for others... 8)

Hey ! Does anybody have any MIDI or written part from this song ?

I'm starting to write it down (don't tell me... I know there must be a lot of errors :P), and I pretend to make a complete MIDI, but time is kind of short for me because of college.

If anybody has a MIDI from any part of it, maybe we can put together with others and get the whole song.

I know that there is a good tab for guitar on internet (written in notepad O_o), and it can be a good reference.

P.S.: If someone has the COMPLETE RIGHT MIDI... save us from hard work, but without messing up with the fun :P.. Post just some few parts and correct us.

seeing Dave's Over the Edge clip and transcription, ive officially started working on a MIDI of Crossing Over from RPM. yeah, its a tough one, but id like the challenge. so far ive got the intro with the bass and main melody. ive found the notation itself easy for the most part, but what i was preocupied with for most of the time was the rhythm and time signatures (as stated in a previous post). i think i have it right now. the only thing is that its not synched exactly with the audio file in cakewalk. but it's pretty close. if you dont mind, anyone who knows or can easily check, let me know if you agree with these time signatures for the intro. i just want to make sure im on the right track before going any further (please dont laugh at me if i have something that really isnt possible or is just dumb, im a little new at this stuff :lol: ):

(metronome set at ~163)

7/8,9/8,7/8,9/8,7/8,7/8,4/8,5/8,7/8,7/8,7/8,9/8,7/8,9/8,8/8,7/8,7/8,7/8

I think the start is more like a straight 4/4 thing with the accent on the upbeat of 4 before the next bar, instead of 7/8 9/8, but that's just the way I tend to think of stuff when it adds up to all 4/4.

Warning: more thoughts on time sigs than I originally planned on typing below, in case you wondered about the 7/8 and 7/4 choices above.

In the same sense as the 7+9 phrasing, I sort of have my own system for deciding whether something is 1 bar of 7/4 (or 4/4 + 3/4) as opposed to 2 bars of 7/8. If there's a strong accent where the 7th quarter note would be, that seems like it reinforces a solid quarter pulse instead of dividing up into 2 7/8's, even if there's a syncopated thing that could start a new 7/8 bar as with the kicks here- I just think of those as upbeats. So that happens with a snare in the 7/4 at the end of each line, but the 2 7/8's I put there don't have that accent, it's 1 3 5 7, 1 3 5 7, plus the first one sort of completes the phrase started by the 4/4 preceding it, and the 2nd one is added on.

This might just be my preference but I think it's easier to read faster note values at a slower tempo, and the snare kind of implies the half tempo at the start, on 2 and 4. So take all those time sigs, make a pair of 4/4's into one 4/4 and double the denominator of the rest, and pretend I explained the difference between hearing 7/16 and 7/8 instead of 7/8 and 7/4. :-) It doesn't change the way to listen and distinguish because it's all about whether or not the off-beat hits are enough to make you feel like it's chopping 1 odd bar into 2 more odd bars, or just upbeats before another downbeat comes in.

Sometimes it's based on preference but often the accents/rhythm could make one way better to memorize or read it. Here it's like the 7/4 7/8 differences- on the 2, 3, 4 of the 2nd bar in 4/4 there are accents: kick, snare, ride (not a real hard accent on 4 but the keys make the quarter pulse clear with quarter, 8th 8th at the end of the bar). To me, the upbeat of 4 didn't do enough alone to switch how the beats & time sigs are grouped because everything around it fits into steady 4/4. If those 9 8th notes were played as 3 groups of 3, like a swing/compound time feel, then I might start thinking about 7/8 9/8. It's always about looking at a larger piece of the music, or even another section with some of the same bars/phrases, and seeing how it would fit. Even then, someone else might think it fits better another way so it's tough to say one way is the absolute right/wrong way. Except for stuff like when WB puts the 13/8 part of The Great Debate (accented 3 3 3 4) as 4/4 + 5/8!!!!

lets see...i think i played it when i was messing around but it was in Em. i dont know what the real key is right now off the top of my head but i'll give you the chords i played in Em and if you find the real key sig, you can just transpose it down or up. i dont have a keyboard w/me right now so this may not be 100% correct.

Em Em/G Cmaj7 D

and the little ritardando ending is on the Em chord ascending up and slowing down as you go. not sure of the intervals of that chord right now, but on the last little arpeggio you do an Em7 chord i think and right after you hit the 7th (the D) you go up a half step to the Eb all in one quick motion.

again, dont quote me on that, but i'll confirm it when i get home. hope this helped.

Does anyone have a MIDI (or notation) for the unison in Scarred, specifically the second half, where it's harmonized with the guitar?

All the MIDI/GuitarPro files are missing this harmony :(

htye keyboard anthology that just came out has parts of this song in it. a good few minutes of it too! plus a bunch of other great songs. and it is in a lot better quality than any midi file.

Searching for Midis of some M. Tempia Korg Demo-Songs - especially Lullaby for a little star and Sunflowers. I already contacted Korg for some Midi files but they don't have them and I dunno if the Korg sends a Midi signal while a demo song is played.

As for transcribing it myself - I totally suck at it ;)

Hey Bakerman, something is not right with the Derekpiano MIDI file. When I play it through WinAmp, the left hand sounds, but when I import it to guitar pro 4, only the right hand appears. Do you know why?

I have download the midi of the solos of overture from baker, anyone has got a complete score, tab or midi, of what plays jordan in live performance (scenes from new york)???


Some advices with the sound of these three songs?lead especially and in the initial part of overture...(i wish I had a sound perfect like the CD)
I have to sample the sound of the clock in regression, and I'm a bit bad in such things I've got a Korg triton extreme anyone could help me?

hey man, your in luck! for a few of us here do indeed have an extremely accurate and complete score for just the keyboard parts for one of those songs u requested, and a lot of other cool SFAM songs! heres where u can get it. its deffinately worth the buy man, check it out! HOORAY!!

oh, and about the other two songs....regression: live it sounded like it was mostly guitar until the end when it sounded like jordan doing some kind of brass in the background, maybe a french horn? i dont know what it is, but it sounded pretty easy to figure out. but if u want to play more along with the guitar, i think playing a warm pad along with the chord progressions the guitar is playing might sound nice as well.


oh wow, i just read the rest of your post :P and noticed that you own an extreme! so do i! and ive tried to do overture on it, but havent finished it, and what i have on it isnt that good. jordan's lead is pretty complicated from what i hear, but Dave (aka Enigma) has posted samples of his lead on here somewhere, and since the extreme is a sampler, u can get it pretty close by sampling what he put up. i havent sampled much with the extreme yet, but what i did sample i found it wasnt too hard, it just takes time to mess around with it all and get used to things. your gonna need a usb cable to hook up from keyboard to computer, as well as a compact flash memory card. if u have a device that can transfer directly from computer to memory card, then u dont need the usb thing, but if not, its probably easier, and cheaper w/the cable and card combination. email me and let me know once u get those or if u already do and i'll answer some questions if u want about sampling and about the extreme. i'm probably not the best source for Korg help around here though man, im pretty sure there are a few others. a friend here who knows a whole lot more about it, having a Karma, is Cory (Scrap). oh, also check out the forums at www.irishacts.com. they have a lot of korg users, and extreme users there who will be a big help. take it easy man. good luck!

Hey , i am looking for Eve midi but with some accurate piano. I have no problem with the intro nor the middle break (those with the warm pad), only the piano is still a bit of a mystery, especial when it plays thirds and sixths.

Hello all keyboardists out there. I'm a guest here just dropping by from the Petrucci forum. I'd like to do a cover of Bostons - Foreplay/Longtime and I could never pull off the keys to it.

if you want, you can help me with a tricky section I'm working on for TGP. The synth at 6:16 is so hard to hear, and it's mainly/only going betwen B and C in different octaves. Anyone can help me if they want.

to me, it sounds like rudess is holding a low B, while adjusting the phase controls with his modulation wheel...

just a guess, but i really cant hear any other notes than the B in that section.

anyone with a kurzweil want to clear this up?

It's hard to what is because of the effect and what is being played, but I still think he might be playing a C or some different octaves. Thanks for the help though.

BTW, my parents celebrated the anniversay yesterday June, 2nd. For anyone interested, it seems that the Catholic Liturgy is shaped on State of Grace, or at least my parson is: starting at the end of the Sanctus, SoG moves in perfect synchronism through the Elevation and the Last Supper, ending slightly too long before the Our Father (which is easily corrected playing the ending a little faster).
What is even more weird, the fraction between the Symbolum and the Sanctus fitted perfectly for Evanescence's My Immortal, but not the full version, the one I used to study it, with one verse, chorus, bridge, solo and chorus again. The ending slightly overlapped on the Sanctus. Funny, don't you think?
(For those wondering, I didn't make a rock mass. Even if, believe me, playing Save Me by the Queen with a chapel organ really makes it pastoral. Anyway, my parson didn't notice the difference ;) ) (and the singer was fantastic)

Don't worry man! :)
I reduced it to a piano song. Well, I would have "reduced" it even if I had full score and JR's patches on JR's keyboard, anyway ;). It came out very very classical indeed. So my advice is: if anyone ever happens to play in a mass, try playing it, possibly with a piano and not an organ (even if it's not bad with the organ, but it obviously needs a different way to play it). That's why JR is GREAT!
Then in the end I couldn't really have played it with a guitarist. My lead guitarist is in the Army and June the second is a National Day here in Italy (Instauration of the Republic), so he couldn't come anyway. And my rythm guit never had time to try it.

Has anyone checked out my MIDIs? I know they aren't full songs, but they are helpful. And I picked a large one for my first complete song, so it might be another month or two before I finish that one

Hmm. Something i've found difficult to transcribe is the organ solo (after the piano solo on JR.com's MIDI page) in Blind Faith? I'm finding it difficult to hear the notes, and I can't seem to get what key it's in. Come to think of it, if someone could just tell me the key, i'd be glad to work on it and post a MIDI when i'm done...

yes, $50 to join.

Let's just say i've probably been a member there since around December last year, and i still have'nt gotten through it all yet.

theres about 24 different 'riffs' from some of his albums, all with notation and mp3s and midis, about 20 or so etudes he has made up, and then tons of lesson sections on technique, harmony, improvisation, etc.. all with beginner, intermediate and advanced examples.

IMO, i've already gotten my moneys worth, but still it looks like theres big plans to add more to it, which im excited about :)

You beated me... I wanted to host it! But you're surely more entitled to do it, my site is general-topic while yours is dt-tribute.com... :)

The rendition is great! It would only need more precise definition of the pads, but warmpad does its job pretty well! The only thing I could suggest, slow down a little bit the first guitar riff (before the main theme).

I had a lot of tempo troubles with this, i think alot of it was rubato, it doesnt sound like they have used a metronome at all. mainly i just wanted the midi to go for as long as the mp3 (because im a stupid perfectionist), so i adjusted the tempo alot where it was necessary.

I just checked the ITNOG midi file morse code. You even did that accurately! Nice job. One small inaccuracy though, at the end of the unison bumblebee solo, the keyboard is supposed to play the E (major third) and not the minor third (I'm not sure if this has been mentioned). Other than that this midi is possibly the best full score midi I've ever heard.

Another suggestion - for the synth drum part, why don't you change the instrument on channel 10 for that section to the TR808 drum machine?(can't remember the number) It might sound a bit closer, unless you wanted it to be seperate from the drums.

did you do that all by yourself from scratch? what a huge project it seems to do that all from scratch. did you use some of bakerman's old midi's for some solos? even if you did, still a great job putting it all together. really tough stuff i think.

I'm glad you all like it. As for the shouting, I had a continuous note using the applause instrument and then used volume fades to bring it in and out.

@ icky - the ITNOG midi is on my site on the same page as TGP midi.

2. The tempo sounds fine to me. What section do you think is wrong?

Alright Alex, I got your MIDI, and it's now on my site. Everybody should head to my site and check it out, because it's a very good transcription. I gave it a quick listen against the song, and it I didn't hear any mistakes. Even if it's technically not perfect it's damn close. Good job on that.

Also, if anyone can come up with a better way to organise my midis page, I'd be grateful, because it's getting very disorganised!

My site now has transcriptions I have done of the Jordan Rudess piano bit in A Change Of Seasons (the fun piano bit). I have the LSFNY version and the Budokan version. They are actually fairly different for the ending, so I did both so people could get a better idea. I also have the start of a Panic Attack MIDI with the strings parts.

All three MIDIs are now on my site. They are up to the same high standard that ITNOG was. They are very worthy of being on my page ;)

A few things I want to say-
The heartbeat at the end of TW is cool. I don't know how you did that through GM.
The lower harmony in the chorus of TW as a wrong note in it. You keep on using a B when it should be a C.
I love the way you doubled a lot of the tracks to get the delay/echo effect, especially on the synths of these walls.
Awesome job on the intro for TROAE. I never usually listen to it on the CD, but it was great hearing it reproduced so well in midi. I was very impressed.
