I have a stupid question from a poor bloody user ...
I have a K2600XS fully loaded, running OS 4.0. Do I have to do something special (like using the compatibility files) if I want to use some K2500 setups ???

I don't think so. Just load them in!

It depends on WHO'S setups you're using. Some people like myself, if I use a preset file in the 2500, I'll actually edit it, and then save it elsewhere that way when I save the setup, it'll load the whole thing.
Some other users that are noobs usually don't - they'll simply use presets, and when they save them, then they're going to have preset files that are pointing to another sound in YOUR keyboard because the preset files between synths are different.
In any case, depending on where you're looking, check them out and see if they work. It's not going to hurt anything by trying :)
As already stated you don't need any compatability files, just select the objects and load them into a bank.
If you download anything for the k2500 you can open the file and select what you want to audition.
Always a good idea to save your current config via using 'everything' just so you can safely return to your customized presets.

Problem is in who makes the files. If they don't save it properly, what's going to happen Rexx is that they're going to get a file that says "okay, Channel 1 is going to be *300, Buzzy waves. Channel 2 is going to be 76, liquid T lead, and channel 3 is going to be *301, Fatty Bass.
Now normally that isn't a problem, however program 76 in the Kurzweil 2500 ISN'T the Liquid T lead, and therefore he's going to have a messed up sound that is supposed to be something else.
Doesn't matter if he loads the objects properly or not, the file still doesn't contain the initial rom object setup files to load the RIGHT sound.
The only way to do this is with the compability files or to have the person that made the sound re-program it so anything that points to a preset will be edited and then saved elsewhere.
In the above case, what I would do is take the program 76, Liquid T lead, then Edit it, and then save it into the 302 spot. That way, instead of channel 2 being 76, Liquid T lead - it would be 302, Liquid T lead.
That would solve the above problem mentioned :)

He he he :)
If I had a K2600 I'd want the k26 base presets in the 1-199 and place the k2500 base presets in the 400-599 banks.
(Heck this IS what I have and use! I have all the K2600 PLUS all the K2500 presets on my K2500xs -minus TMP)
To me it will never be a problem where an object is located because I'll edit a name manager script to reflect my current presets (ie, program selection within cubase) and save to disk & sysex data of the sounds used in the song.
The only time it would be a problem is when exchanging kurzweil song files where for example Liquid T Lead needs to be re-routed from 76 to 476.
[The Kurzweil automatically saves samples and songs to the 200 bank so I keep banks 200 & 300 empty for auditioning and clairity]

Good plan man. That's cool!
hmmm... Something to consider I guess :)
How can you get a hold of the k2500 presets, through the Kurz website ?

The compatibility files are required if your previous setups make use of the programs 1-200. The above files will overwrite your factory programs (making a star appear next the program number) and you can now load your setups without any worries - they'll work. If you save your setup, the K will ask you to save dependent objects, click the softbutton "yes". Afterwards, once you have saved all your setups that way, you may delete the comptability files through the Master menu.
The compatibility files either come shipped on disks with your K2600, or in case that you don't have those disks for any reasons, there is an FTP domain in the Kurzweil Music Systems Download area (within the FTP domain, check for either the K2500 or K2600 directories).
