So here is the deal - someone I know whats to buy his first keyboard.
He likes Muse music very much.
He can choose between Yamaha MO8, Korg TR88 and Alesis Fusion 8HD.

Fusion is hard to get, where he lives, so...

I recommended Fusion - and in case he won't able to find it - Yamaha MO8.
I've recommended against Korg TR, because it doesn't have good acoustic sounds. (pianos etc) and he needs sounds like piano, EP and organs etc.

What do you think?
Fusion or MO8?
Does MO has the same sample set as s90? Can MO use user samples for patches (I know it doesn't have sampling)

I would go with the Fusion to start with, even if it's hard to get hold of. For a beginner keyboardist, sampling really isn't an important option - my first two boards couldn't sample anything at all, and I didn't miss the feature. My Fusion has the capability to sample through hardware, but I find that it's usually easier to use a computer-based VST called Kontakt instead.

I -think- that the MO8 and S90 share a similar sound bank, with the exception of the pianos, but i'm not totally sure on that so you'd have to ask a resident Yamaha expert.

You mean OmegaMonkey?

Lol - this guy just walked into the store, and bought Fantom x8 (after trying it... I hope). It's just really strange - I never said FX "ruled" or was "the best keyboard ever". We discussed only MO8, s90, TR88, Fusion, etc. But he knew that I had one...
I've spend like 4 hours discussing these models with him!

OMG !! Fantom X8 as a first keyboard...
I was checking the price of keyboards and I think I'll go for an used Mo8 or Motif es8 (if i can find a cheap one... !)

Well I found a Mo8 in auction for 1300 $ and I thought I would buy it but I changed my mind when I saw it doesn't have aftertouch...

I think I'll wait to have a little more money to buy a more recent keyboard but don't worry, I'll ask you guys before buying it...!

You turned down a Mo8 because it doesn't have aftertouch? You do know that unless aftertouch is a massive part of your playing style, you can overcome that shortcoming in a myriad of ways, right?

Yeah, that's what this dude said btw. He thought aftertouch was something essential for a keyboard, but I explained that it depends on your style - and if you play like pianos and organs, you don't need it at all!

As a matter of fact, I never use it, because my fingers get tired very fast if I do so (and in other any circumstances they don't!!! If I play to long, I start sweating very hard, and my fingers don't get tired at all), and it just doesn't feel right - I prefer wheels, joystick and expression pedal!

yeah and expression pedal is just as good. PLUS midi controllers are not so expensive anyway. And if he ever wants a second board he can just use that.

Yeah, I know that aftertouch isn't an the most important thing in a keyboard but I will not don't buy the Mo8 just because of that.

But I think that instead of buying a keyboard that is a little old, I'll wait to see if I can't buy something that could be more recent.

Btw, I'm not a pro in keyboard, so even if I'm reading often the forum, I can't say I'm experienced...

Well I'll just wait but I can't (and didn't) say that the Mo8 wasn't a great keyboard : for it's price, it's an amazing keyboard.

Lol, just what to add that he is a sucker

If he would actually listen to me, he wouldn't have bought FX8 at the full price, just before then release of the G, which is costs just the same amount of money now
Well, his parents paid for it - so why should he care?
I earned mine myself, and it was 2 years ago. And I was thinking about it like 6 months or so... he just went there and freaking bought it!!!

Some people just never listen.... don't want to disappointed him... BUT HE SHOULD BE LOL!
