Been getting an offer for a Korg R3
I already have a Roland JP-8000

What do you think, overkill?

I wish I had Jp-8000.

R3 has Radias' MMT sound engine, so it's pretty good.
PCM sounds of it IMHO suck - I never use them.

Either way, you will get totally different sound. Waveforms just sound different, and it has Cross, VPM, and Unison (modulations). I get some pretty nice results with them.
It also has dedicated Unison mode, which gives additional 6 detuned voices. So I guess it's a pad beast - you can have like 31 detuned voices, using only 6 voices, if my calculations are correct. (how ever, R3 has much less polyphony)
So they answer is no: you shouldn't stick with just 1 VA. If you get a good deal, take it.

Personally I would probably sell the JP8K (actually never really liked those all that much though they were cool at the time), and get something like the NL3.

The first rule of gear buying is never buy something just because its there. Just because you can get a "good deal" (which you really didnt specify what it was even) on the R3, doesnt mean that's what you should get or if you should even get anything. You should look at your needs, and consider the strengths and weaknesses of your setup and try to address those as fully as possible with whatever new piece of gear you consider.

If you are happy with the VA abilities of the JP, rather than get another VA, I would go for something completely different to continue expanding your "sound universe". Something FM maybe like a TG77, a "clone wheel", or maybe even a physical modeling synth like the VL70. Once you have all those bases (the ones that you think you need anyway) covered, then you get start broadening each area with more gear.

I dissagree on one point- ALWAYS buy something if its just there. More importantly if its a great price get it!! Fool with it for a while see if you like it and if not sell it and make a few bucks to add to your bank account. Its always worked for me and I almost always make money! My set up is like a revolving door synths come in synths go out!
