View Full Version : Noob begs for answers to controller questions...

Figure I best post this here in the gear section as well...

I'm a frequenter (I don't think that's a word...) of the MP.com message boards. You're probably wondering why I'm here, and it's quite simple, I'm a multi-instrumentalist looking to better his MIDI rig.

I'm looking for a fully weighted controller, preferably with at least a pitch wheel. (More built-in modulation controls the better!)

(I plan to purchase Rack modules obviously.)

The cheaper the better. 76-88 keys if possible.

I've read about the Roland A80, but there aren't many on the 'Bay and they're a bit pricey.

So, I don't know the gear, just how to work it and play it.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

I'd go for the new M-Audio 88-note controller board... um, Keystation 88 or something like that. It's due to be released any time now, and is very highly rated, has a ton of functions and is quite affordable.

Er, that's neither a controller keyboard, nor does it have 76 or 88 keys. The last great keyboard Yamaha made though, it's awesome, but it doesn't remotely fulfil Mr Anahamkarah's criteria.:D

Whereabouts? It's not listed on http://www.m-audio.com/index.php?do=products.list&ID=maudiocontrollers (or the .co.uk equivalent) as far as I can see!

Martin, the Pro88 was on the pro products/M-Audio Controllers page yesterday along with info on Enigma (no not that one !) the software frontend to the M-Audio/Evo controllers. I Checked just now and its gone, not sure what they are playing at. Dolphin music (http://dolphinmusic.co.uk/d2/) are listed as a stockist, Priced at £399.

I'd like to know some things about Keystation Pro 88 (possibly from someone who uses it):

1) contruction quality of the keys (the action the response, the material, their robustness, etc...)

2) contruction quality of the body (material, robustness, has it a plastic-toy feeling, or does it look more robust?)

3) contrusction quality of the controllers (the faders, the rotative ones, etc... and, most of allo, the modulation wheels...)

4) Does it handle both attack velocity and release velocity?

5) No kind of aftertouch is supported at all, right?

6) How many programs and banks can it store?

In general.. I wonder if it trasmits the sensation of a solid, well built keyboard controller, suitable for live preformace, or it looks more like a toy, or anyway... no more than a fragile PC controller.

Thanx

I hope the Keystaion 88 is better than the Radium 61. I DESTROYED mine with normal playing and practice in a little over a year. The keys (not all, just some) stick up about 1/8 " more than the rest when doing fast runs or palm smears...

Well, first of all... they're completely different keyboards, with.. completely different weights, and anyway, I think in this case the keys part was actually built by Evolution, not M-Audio itself...

Another thing I'd like to know, is about the 10 only memory locations.
Aren't they too limited for live performance?

I''m sorry :-P

It's just I didn't get those answers and some topics looked "dead" so...considering I don't wan't to waste my (limited) money and don't have much experience... :-P
