Anybody using tube pre's or other tube processors here? What do you have, what are using it for, and how pleased are you with the results?
Thanks,
Jerry

I use this one:

I process Hammond/Rhodes sounds and analog synths trough it, i am very pleased with the results! My Dad uses is for his guitar and is also happy with the results. For under $60, you can't go wrong.

We've been using a variety of tube pres in our
recent recording. On the list...
Universal Audio 6176 (very warm)
Avalon 737sp (pristine)

I have one of the Behringer MIC100 pre's too, I mostly use it for vocals but I've tried running a bass through it, and, active bass notwithstanding (ie it was hard to get a clean sound through it cos it was overloading the input) it had a lovely warm tone to it.

I `ve use the Berhinger Ultragain pro and it sounds very, very good. I use it for a preamp for guitar micing, also to record bass and vocals. I like it too fof processing vintage keys like mellotron or hammond

That ultragain seems like such a value. Sounds like a synth could overload the inputs though. Does it distort smoothly, or does it cough? Also, how's the noise floor?
Frank what did you use on the synths the Avalon or the UA? Do you use any processors in your own studio, or go straight in?

Jerry,
Recording at Planet 10 Studios in Chicago,
I used both on numerous tunes
for the new record. I leaned more
towards the Avalon as the sound appealed
more to me especially in the lower
register. Really solid low end.
The UA is just really way too dark for
my tastes. If you've got a really
brightly toned female vocalist, that
could be your ticket.
In the past I've gone directly into
a recorder (ADAT, DA88). Keys nowadays
have such a hot signal that it's usually
not necessary to use a pre. You'll often
turn to a pre if you'd like to alter
the character of you tone (tubes=warmer
sound).
I returned my Focusrite Twin Trak and
instead got a couple of Presonus Eureka's.
The TT really didn't do much for my tone
as a DI box. It made most of a difference
at the mic pre inputs.
Eurekas are what I now use in my own studio
(very clean, similar to Avalon)although I'm now interested in picking up a couple of Avalon 737sp's
somewhere down the line.

Lots of tubes.
Fender Twin Amp 100w (13 tubes) (guitar)
Apex 450 dual condenser tube mic with 1- 12ax7 (vocal, acoustic)
Ada MP-1 programmable tube preamp, uses 2- 12ax7's (guitar dist)
Best tube amp I ever played was a friends fathers accordion amp made in Italy. It had one volume knob, a couple inputs and about 100 tubes w/ 2 12" JBL's (old tubes took 10 minutes before any sound kicked in) but it was MAGIC and of course he wouldn't sell.
