Over the weekend I saw a "reunion" show for a band that carried the reputation of "Best Cover Band in Baltimore" for years. They were called "Mannekin" (long before the movie ever came out). All 5 musicians were top notch players, and 3 went on to perform with National Acts such as Warrant, Michael Schenker and Blue Murder. The Keyboardist in this group was nothing short of phenomenal. His name is David White. (There was a rumor that he was offered the DT spot when Kevin left, but I can't confirm it). Anyway, when the band was at its peak, Dave had in his setup a beautiful MemoryMoog Plus. With this in his rig, he was covering material such as "Roundabout" by Yes, "Frankenstein", "Renegade by Styx" and The William Tell Overture (Amazing rendition). Since everyone had to fly in for the show, Dave borrowed a couple of Tritons (2 of them) and used them for the show. The sound was incredible, and he was able to pull off every one of those songs with an incredible likeness to the MemoryMoog patches. I was in awe not just of his flawless playing, but also the fantastic sound of those Tritons. It made me start thinking about the Rolands I own...maybe I should have gone Korg !

And then you'd miss the Roland piano sounds. I love them...they're complete in their own way...they can be tweaked and they are well-layered. Tritons have really poor samples. I own a Triton Le (so the worst :( ) and I find an Alesis QS sample much better, even if it's terrible :|.
By the way, from the best to the worst of Tritons, great leads, great synth sounds - but if you want something acoustic..."look another way"...
I WANT YOUR JD800! :D

For these sounds, you should use a sampler to get good sounding results.

Back to topic, I would like to hear how the Triton replaces a memoryMoog.
I wonder if he was using MOSS boards ? MOSS does a decent job of approaching some of the Moog sounds.
I am not familiar with the MemoryMoog, but I did own the Mini in the '70's. There are a few Moog sounds that Roland and Triton come close too but not enough
to wow me. I plan on getting the Arturia softsynths.

In case you are curious, here's some info on the memorymoog.

You have a good point. I do enjoy the piano. I have an RS-9 in my rig, with the semi weighted keys, which gives a lot of flexibility. on the Moog side of things, I do get some decent analog through my JV-880, which has the Vintage Synth expansion installed.
Cheers !

I've always loved that board's sound.
Very fat and punchy, and usually on ebay in
the $1500 - $3000 range, with midi an occasional
feature.

Chris:
Forgive my going off topic, but why don't you put the vintage board in the JD800? I believe there is a whole bank of sounds on that vintage card that are not available in the JV and super JV synths ... but are available on the JD.
It's a lush sounding card, I agree. And thats how you get Memorymoogs out of romplers I guess, you layer four tones or more...
I saw a good quality JD in Austin yesterday. So tempted ... sweet machine.

Thanks for the advice !
I will look for that card.
I actually have a JV-880 in my rack with the Vintage Synth expansion loaded.
More analog is always better.
Cheers
