Ok, so this is something I've been wondering about, to be able to get correct technique, should you play more on the fingertips or on the finger "pads"? It'd be nice to know so that I can be sure I am not using the wrong technique

That depends on what you are playing...
I use both "techniques".

For example - if I play fast melody with a proximate keys, I use fingertips.
If I play deep in the keys, I use "pads"
If I have to stretch out my hand to play octaves, of melodies with big intervals - pads.
If I play staccatos - fingertips
And I think 99% of the piano players/keyboardists does the same

You have to make "natural" movements, so you should not think about that.

But you do have to watch out for right fingers! Because sometime the natural movement is not the best thing to do.

Some people ignore 4 finger when they can, because it's the weakest finger.
Don't ignore it - if something has to be played with 4, do it - otherwise you won't develop it.
I had this Prelude of Bach (number 5 from Well Tempered Clavier, I think) - it's a fast melody - my 4 finger always screwed up, but now it's okay...

A weak finger is a weak link in your hand!!!

Agreed with AnatomiC, 99% of the time depending on a fast/slow or more chord oriented/more arpeggio oriented music you are playing you will naturally adjust you fingers to the correct position i.e. fingertips or pads.
