Ok, so I've been at a decent keyboard store a couple of times over the past few weeks trying out diferent machines and I have decided that I need to refresh my setup. I have thought of several options considering what I already have: a Korg M1 and a Korg Wavestation. I absolutely love the wavestation but the M1 is a bit too limited and I don't like it's sounds too much. My main need was for decent piano and string sounds untill I heard the analogue machines.
I've tryed out the following equipment:

Nord Electro
Nord Lead 2
Triton Extreme
Triton Le
Motif 6 ES
Alesis ION

After trying out the ION (the Lead 2 was too complicated to get a good impresion out of a shop tryout session, and the guy at the shop had no idea how to use it) I started to love and crave the analogue option (I do realise that the nord has more reputation and maby if I find a shop were they actually know how to use it I can get a decent demonstration). Still that gives me no realistic piano or strings.
Then I thought: srtings I have in the wavestation up to a certain extent, although they are not too realistic (they still kick ass, though). The electro had a nice piano, 76 keys and the nicest rhodes and wurly I've heard to date, plus a very cool sounding organ. The triton and motif were cool as hell (especially the triton), but there are so many options about them that I would probably never use (again, especially the triton) that I don't know if it's worth it.
The options I came up with, considering money of course, are:

a) The Triton Extreme combined with the wavestation.
b) The Electro and an analogue machine (probably the ION, although the nord lead 2, from what I've heard mainly by derek sherinian, is the power tool) combined with the wavestation.
c) The Motif and an analogue synth, combined, again with the wavestation (I just love it :P )

What do you sugest? My main playing stile is metal in diferent styles, but not too progressive. I love weird electronic stuff and leads but I also need orchestral sounds for my music...

Thanx!!!

From what you've described, it sounds to me that either of the
Tritons or the Motif ES 6 would be a great fit for the type of
music you're looking to create.

Yeah well that's the point. They will cover my needs right now but I really would love to experiment with new stuff. I don't know if purchasing one of the other boards will be worth it or if there is plenty of experimenting to do in the Triton/Motif, at least for the time being...
My doubt is, having seen the possibilities of the workstations, how much difference would it make to get a decent analogue synth? What are the real possibilities/uses of the analogue machines compared to the workstations?

Thanks for your reply!

I'd go for b) although I wasn't thrilled with the action on the ION... I'd personally couple the Electro 73 with the Wavestation and the Nord RACK 2X cos it's a lot cheaper than the keyboard...

What, me just suggesting someone goes for a rack rather than a keyboard? Something must be wrong... (having just ordered my 3rd 'board this very morning, a E-MU MK-6 to add to my arsenal (picked it up seriously cheap :)))

Peace
Martin

If it were me, I'd go for the Korg Triton Extreme paired with your Wavestation, then get the MOSS board for the Triton Extreme. The MOSS board is brilliant for fat analogue besides being great for physical modelling of acoustic, wind, brass, strings etc. I think with this combo you could truely say, I need nothing else but my creativity and musicianship.

P.S. Never get rid of that Wavestation, worst mistake I ever did was get rid of mine. :D

I recommend the Ion and the Motif. I have an S90 and an Ion, and they complement each other really well. The S90 has an awesome piano and, IMO, better acoustic sounds than the Triton, but it's not as good at synth sounds. The Motif has basically the same engine as the S90, plus it has a ton of effects, so you can run the Ion through it.

Don't worry, that will never happen!!! I'm seriously in love with this machine. The guitarist in my band and I have a special "solo" spot in the intro of a Kamelot cover in which I basically play the chord progression of the chorus with an insane pad I created with the wavestation whilst he does one of those "slow and inspired" solos that guitarists do  . Last time we did it in a rehearsal it lasted for about 5 minutes!! (It's only supposed to be 22 bars long) When it all ended and we finally got through the song, the bassist said "dude, I have chills down my spine every time I hear you guys play that!"
