The old ones....
And with this I mean, when Fish was the singer...
Not the best singer around, but the band made some real good music in that time and I'm talking about the 80's then........
Numbers like: Slainthe Mat, Incommunicado, Market Square Heroes etc. etc. etc.
NOLAN!!!!! Your comment on this one!!!

I first remember seeing Marillion in the Five Years in a LIVEtime DVD (or however you say it). The song (Easter) inspired me to buy a bunch of their albums, which I love.

You must be kiddin' me. Marillion is one of my most beloved bands. They are simply wonderful, and I totally second the recommendation for the old stuff.
Get: Misplaced Childhood, Clutching at straws, Script for a jester's tear, and Fugazi. I do not like the music they write with the new singer, although "Seasons End" was pretty good, but the magic was gone. To be completely honest, I stopped following their new stuff so I don't know how good they are. EMI released a singles dvd recently, quite nice.
Mark Kelly (the keyboardist) is just awesome IMO, Steve Rothery (the guitarist) is fantastic, but do not expect virtuoso playing here. Their music is tasteful, magical, and surreal sometimes. Fish's lyrics were also very nice.
Have fun.

Their newer stuff is different, but certainly not inferior, to their older stuff. Marbles and Anaraknophobia are great albums, as are the early H albums (Brave is not an easy listen but is compositionally genius). The ones I might be tempted to give a miss are marillion.com and This Strange Engine, as those two lacked direction somehow. New album out in April as well, which I'm really looking forward to.

yep, the marillion with Fish stuff is GOLD!!
some of the beste ever made.
I never got into Steve Hogarth as the new singer although Brave is a great album.
But first, buy the old ones as mentioned above

Easter is one of the most beautiful songs ever written, with an amazing guitar solo.
It inspired me to buy Misplaced Childhood, which is good but not quite my cup of tea...

I prefer the H era, specially Brave and Marbles. I went to see them live in London at the end of their tour in 2005 and it was so amazing. They do rock live, and Steve Rothery has a great guitar sound.
