hey guys!
I was looking for information on baritone guitars when I saw this website of a luthier who makes baritone guitars and who made the "pikasso guitar"
there is a vid of a guy plying it.. do you like it?
I think it is very cool, a different guitar world, it makes me think of the JR song "From Within"!!

Nice sound and piece. Anyway, I always have the same feeling about this kind of "unique" instruments... Do they last and become considered as "standard", beginning to gather music written for them and a an increasing number of players devoted to developing technique to what they consider their main instrument?
Or do they stay as a "cutscene" (though nice and obviously clever) to be soon forgotten of?
Also, for this one in particular it seems to me that they haven't created a new/different guitar, but they have added a number of harp strings to a guitar. (and I wonder how this affects its playability on the guitar side).
That said the overall result, sound and look are amazing.

It looked like he had like the bass on the "regular" guitar, and then everything else was harp-ish... not guitar+harp, but bass+harp. subtle difference

I saw Metheny play this guitar at a concert last year, and he really only uses it for that one tune, which is typically an open improvisation in the middle of the show. It's a lovely instrument, but a little limited, in spite of all the strings, because you're locked into one tuning with those open strings.
A little personal note: my brother, who is a Unix programmer and jazz guitarist in Boston, used to live with Mark Herbert, a luthier who is Pat's main guitar technician. My brother has played this instrument, which is where I got the opinion from. He says that Mark hates to work on this guitar - it takes all day just to unstring and restring it, and because of all the string tension, it's always warping, so it's in the shop a lot.

Nice vid, it''s kinda like a guitar which tries to do what we keyboard players do, a lot of keyboards around us at the same time, only here all those guitars are packed in one thing.
