Hello there,
Does any one know if there is any program that can notate indian, arabic... and that kind of 3 quarter of a note tunes with odd scales and time signatures.

I don't know if "Finale" will do the trick

Cheers

I'm not certain but Sonar has a lot of options to customize settings and print out notation. Thats a rather expensive route to go for notation software however its an awesome sequencer and the newer versions have been great with the soft synths.

I'm not sure what "notating in Arabic/Indian" means. I don't think micro-tonal playback with notation is easily achieved on any package.

But odd time signatures, various tuplets, all keys, different kinds of staves, yeah all of it's possible. The two programs that are most used are Sibelius and Finale. A recent Keyboard magazine had a comparison I believe.

I've used both a bit, Finale more than Sibelius. I score horns frequently with Printmusic, a low end version of Finale, and it does what I need. The interface is a little kludgy. To my taste, Sibelius has an easier interface, more useful templates, etc.

Best,

Go with either Finale or Sibelius. They can score ANYTHING!!!

Hi Tusker,
Notating in Arabic and other orietal music, is a little bit different from normal notation... it contains with addition to Flats and Sharps...3/4 of a note (street naming 1/4 of a note) and the scales include these notes that can be approximated with quarter tones (depicted using the half-flat http://www.maqamworld.com/images/symbols/half_flat.gif sign or the half-sharp
http://www.maqamworld.com/images/symbols/half_sharp.gif sign ), although they rarely are precise quarters falling exactly halfway between two semitones. Even notes depicted as semitones sometimes include microtonal subtleties depending on the maqam in which they are used. For this reason, when writing Arabic music using the Western notation system, there is an understanding that the exact tuning of each note might vary with each maqam and must be learned by ear.
And that's what I am trying to look for in notating programs.

Thanks a million guys I will check finale and sibelius again and dig deeper to see.

All the best
