WHEN DREAM THEATER
AND ROADRUNNER RECORDS UNITE!

BAND AND LABEL JOIN FORCES WITH NEW STUDIO ALBUM PLUS WORLD TOUR
TO FOLLOW

ROADRUNNER RECORDS is proud to announce the signing of progressive metal pioneers Dream Theater. A new studio album, Systematic Chaos is due in June. Dream Theater will hit the road in support of the album for a world tour, including major festival appearances in Europe.

Since their first studio release in 1989, this US based five-piece has notched up record and DVD sales in excess of six million and headlined to audiences of 20,000. Having undertaken seven world tours across 42 different countries, Dream Theater has established a live reputation that has swept them to arena-status around the globe. They have appeared alongside acts such as Deep Purple, Iron Maiden and Yes.

Recognized by peers and public alike for their advanced musical expertise, the band (Mike Portnoy, drums; John Petrucci, guitar; John Myung, bass; James LaBrie, vocals; Jordan Rudess, keyboards) has long held the ability to combine complex arrangements with unadulterated songwriting skills, the material often underpinned by riffs as heavy as anything in the Metallica repertoire.

“This album’s got all of the elements we’ve become known for,” reveals Portnoy. “The focus on musicianship, the skull-crushing riffs, the big progressive epics and the heart-wrenching melodies. We’ve got one of the strongest and most devoted fan bases in the world, and they should certainly be happy with the new material. By working closely with the label we hope to turn a great many new heads too.”

“Dream Theater and Roadrunner Records have led parallel careers on the cutting edge of metal for many years,” say A&R men, Derek Oliver & Dante Bonutto, “We’re thrilled to be working with a genuine market-leader, and when you add everything the guys bring to the table to the independent spirit and work ethic of the label, the results can only be exciting in the extreme!”

Prior to teaming up with Roadrunner, Dream Theater was signed to a seven-album deal with Warner Music Group worldwide. The deal commenced with the critically acclaimed and commercially successful Images And Words (1992), a Gold-certified US release, and concluded, in equal style, with Octavarium (2005), a Top 40 Billboard outing. In August of last year the band issued Score, a live album/DVD (recorded at Radio City Music Hall in New York), which went straight to the No. 1 spot on the Billboard DVD charts, knocking Pink Floyd from the top!

By the following month, the five were holed up at Avatar Studios in New York, working on the new album with veteran engineer/ mixer Paul Northfield (Rush, Queensr˙che, Porcupine Tree). As usual, Portnoy and Petrucci chose to co-produce the project, which features seven compositions (one a 25-minute epic), and word on the grapevine is that the Dream Theater/Roadrunner alliance looks all set to kick off with a classic.

Systematic Chaos, Dream Theater’s ninth studio release, arrives at a time when the band is casting a longer-than-ever shadow across the rock and metal landscape. Their influence is being acknowledged by an increasing number of contemporary, cutting-edge acts such as Stone Sour, Trivium, Shadows Fall, Opeth as their fan base continues to grow.

Touring plans will be announced shortly. Please visit www.roadrunnerrecords.com or www.dreamtheater.net for up to the minute information.

get your toes tapping and your hands clapping.

Hopefully they don't get too caught up in Europe this tour. Although they record in the United States, they sure do put on a lot of concerts overseas. I still haven't had the opportunity to see them and I live in the 4th largest city - Houston.

Allright, ninth album congrats....

But systematic chaos doesn't really sound ninth to me
I mean:
Sixth: six degrees...
Seven : train of thought (contains 7 tracks)
Eight : Octavarium (a whole bunch of thing reffering to 8)
Nine : systematic chaos ???

Not that it has to refer to 9 , It still is going to be a kickass album
But maybe nine tracks ??? or a song called nine??? or a mathematical reference ???

Anyway hell I'm excited, I just don't hope they do a festival in Holland, I hope they do ahoy or Heineken music hall again in this small but fine country.

Exciting I can't wait

Mmm, can't wait (yeah, like I could with any DT - JR album release before ). And, BTW, Systematic chaos sounds really nice especially after the so "mathematical" Octavarium. It sure does sound like something electronica, but I doubt there 're gonna be songs like Petrudgaboom or Laportqwvek in it

Just minutes ago myself, JP and Paul Northfield signed off on the final mix of the new album!
We are absolutely floored!!

I NEVER say this about a new album (as it's so cliched for an artist to say this about their latest release), but I honestly think this may be my favorite DT album to date!!!
It really has EVERYTHING!

John and I will be mastering next Tuesday and shortly after that, I'll release some more info (song titles, etc.)

Mmm... am I the only one to think this might be cool? I love porcupine tree, and SW does great melodies and is a fantastic songwriter. He's done backing vocals for a lot of things as well, including Opeth and Pain of Salvation I think, so he could well be doing that. But it might not fit too well with Dream Theater...

I'm sure the guys know what they're doing. Don't understand the "apology" thing though

I also think he is incredible, and im going to enjoy it, though it is more probable that the song is more proggressive than metal, which is excellent and better for me.
sw can also compose metal, though. he has composed for opeth and some of pt's metal-y stuff.

P.S. The first DT video with JR!!! I thought they were done when Hollow Years went so badly.

wow, that is fairly surprising news, as i believe in one of the commentaries on either Live in Tokyo or Five Years in a Live Time DVDs, i think portnoy talks about how the band was done with music videos. this is definitely a label thing, and i bet they're also going to really do a viable radio edit.

i have to say, on octavarium, they really should have pushed "I Walk Beside You" as the radio single. i think it was silly not to, so i really hope Roadrunner will help the band make a better decision about which song from this album to try to push to radio. it would just be really cool for a killer DT song to get some serious airplay because the band deserves it. there are still people that remember DT only as a "one-hit wonder" band from "Pull Me Under," and that's doing a disservice to what a quality act DT is.

i was just listening to the Dark Eternal Night. it has really really grown on me! so fun to listen to

but i noticed that some parts really remind me of Dance of Eternity. This may be just my imagination, or maybe has already been discussed, but i also notice a similarity in the titles of the two songs.

Dance of Eternity
Dark Eternal Night

i dunno...maybe it's just me :P

have i mentioned i'm excited for this album?

KFlester can bite me. I can't stop listening to this CD.

This album absolutely and totally blows me off my feet. I've taken to calling it 'Crunchy Goodness' instead of the real title though ...

Jordan, hope we get to see you in Upper Darby.

Perhaps in terms of complexity. But as an album I'd say 6DOIT is better. The Dark Eternal Night, Forsaken and Prophets of War, on the other hand, may well be the best songs ever.

Wow...this album is the most technical album I've ever heard. I loved The Dark Eternal Night and Constant Motion. And the solo by Jordan in Constant Motion was awesome. Too bad Jordan's solo wasn't as long as Petrucci's.

I saw the billboard album charts of dated June 23. OMG!! DT landed at #19!! I think this is great!! Thank you DT. Thank you everyone.

Edit: I watched the documentary again though, I remembered I had laughed in a certain scene. I laughed so hard during the scene where JP was playing the last solo of The Ministry of Lost Souls and the video of him was divided into a lot of small squares finally. That was so funny because what I expected happened!! This DVD is full of humor. I really enjoyed it!!

Hello, before I post my opinion on Systematic Chaos, I just want to tell you not to hate me or crush me for the things I'm about to say.

I really think this is the most discreet album of all. It's not bad at all, but I don't really think it has any song that could beat the classics. As a whole album I think even Falling into infinity or when dream and day unite are quite ahead of it, and I don't mean technically or sound quality, I mean in composition quiality. I was really hoping to hear something different but still "Dreamtheatearesq", kind of what we all felt when we heard octavarium.
Songs like Forsaken, constant motion, the dark eternal night or prophets of war, don't show me anything new that is really convincing.
Both In the pressence of enemies are good songs, the best of the album, but seriously, do you like them better than under a glass moon, Voices, Fatal Tragedy, Hell's kitchen, Glass Prison, In the name of god or Octavarium? I gave an example of an extraordinary song form each album, and I don't think any of the Systematic Chaos can catch up with them.
I'm sorry for saying all this, because I know there are people that may really love this new album. I'm not been disrespectfull at all, but I think that in a forum there must be a mixture of reviews and opinons.
Well this is my opinion and I was glad to read all yours before.

Cheers,

Omar

I understand your point (and I won't kill you!), but I think it's good that DT are making a good mixture of music on their album that covers everything from more radio-friendly tracks like Forsaken and Constant Motion to 25 minute epics like ITPOE. And I think they always manage to give a piece of music the unique DT flavour.

A song like Constant Motion may appear to be a fairly standard Metallica style song at first, but the riff with the many time sigs, the classy keyboard parts by JR and the catchy chorus are all done with DT's usual style for creating a good song.

A song like The Dark Eternal Night is something fairly different for DT, and I love it. Undeniably DT in areas, completely new ground in other areas.

And I have to disagree with you and say ITPOE ranks up there with the classic DT tracks. It has some beautiful musical and lyrical moments, some cool heavy bits and some of DT's best recurring melodic sections (I can think of 2 major ones).

I think it's great that DT are exploring different and perhaps more mainstream styles of music in a very DT kind of way, creating music that appeals to a wide fanbase. Of course, I've never been a progressive fan but really a metal fan. DT's problem is that they appeal to such a wide fanbase, that of course they can't please everyone, but I must say I think the album is great, and knowing DT they will do something different yet again for the next album, and I'm sure it will be great no matter what they do.

It's always great to compare a 7 minute song to a 25 minute epic. In my opinion, none of those songs are way better than ITPOE (well, UAGM, ITNOG and 8V are all really close). The situation would be different if you compared ITPOE to Metropolis (it's not long but it's more extraordinary song from IAW), ACOS or 6DOIT imho.

IMHO.... I think ITPOE is fantastic, and far superior to ITNOG in all aspect except perhaps lyrically, it also gives the Glass Prison a run for its money.

Just a little rant here, and not directed at anyone at all, but ive heard so many fans say they love SC, so many others say theyre satisfied and whole other breed saying they hate it and want I&W back. MP has specifically said the DT will never repeat itself if it can help it, and the constant comparisons between how songs off SC should be more like songs of album A,B or C are IMHO more than slightly pointless. But then again everyone is entitled to their view, and i respect it totally.

The music on SC i feel is the best DT has done in a few years and sounds fresh (relatively), new and original, in most aspects.

I understand fans desire to have another defining progrock classic, because i felt completely underwhelmed on my first SC listen, but now about a dozen or so listens down the road i totally love it.

I've never read the interview that DT talked about the album cover of SC, but a Japanese magazine asked Mike about it.
He said that nine ants just meant the ninth album and that they had no hidden message.
Hmmm....that has settled our question.

What's the problem? The special edition is supposed to come in a cardboard slip-case that has the traffic light picture. Once you take that off, inside is a normal CD case, and the cover for that is like the normal cover, but with the traffic lights on it.
