View Full Version : Check out this jam

I made this jam based off the bassline, which Enigma made awhile back while me and him were showing off to eachother (and I was getting my ass kicked  )

The backing track is pretty rough (one take without practicing it, and I suck at keyboard drums, I know) and I had to use that wonderful MIDI guitar because I was using up my grand total of one effect processor for the lead, which made my good guitar sounds void for this.

Anyway, enough excuses, here's the jam. Emphasis is on the solo, since that's all I really cared about when I recorded it. It was improv btw, so it's not perfect, but some of my best improv synth soloing to date, so I'm pretty pleased with it

Thanks to White Raven for hosting it.

Hopefully I'll record a better version of the backing track by the time the weekend is up and I'll put it up on progsounds so you guys can do your own thing with it if you like.

Bonus points to anybody who can guess what sounds my lead is made out of.

ah...cool stuff, but, yeah the backing track does need to be tightened up...but you said that already, so...yeah.

as for your solo, i felt at times the rhythm was shaky, but that could have been due to the backing track...you had some good phrasing in there and some nice ideas, too. i think you should try and make your lead a little smoother...it felt too rough around the edges, but that's just my taste. good stuff, though--let us know when you have the "cleaned up" version!

I was planning on making it today but I was up to my neck in english homework (my fault, I procrastinated like crazy).

Some of my rhythms tend to sound a little off because I don't play in perfectly strict time when I solo...I'll do stuff where I start a run too slow and get faster until I'm too fast and it lines up in the end...sorta like how you would play a classical peice rubato and such. I find that you can get a little more expression that way. It's still gotta be in time, but I just let it flow a little more freely.
That being said, I didn't do a whole lot of that in here, some of it was just plain sloppy.

About my lead...sometimes it gets a click type thing going between notes because I can't make it monophonic, so if notes cross over eachother real quick it sounds "sharp" going from note to note. Gotta love them portable keyboards.

Cool playing Liquid, I liked the backing and your solo, sounded like you were listening to what you were playing over and coming up with some nice soloing. I was'nt too sure about your lead patch though, It had a nice sound, but would have been nice if it were monophonic, but you did write why that was.

Keep rocking dude... :D

Your a really, really good player man. the solo rocked thats all I can really say musically, you kept it interested and good throughout, excellent, I will say though, the casio tones were kind of cheesy, especially the distorted guitar of the backtrack (you explained why you needed to use it, but the fact that you did says something though!). I dont really understand why you use a casio, you are way, way better than its intended audience, and though you do bring out the potential of the board, im not quite sure why someone as good as you would use it, if money is an issue well you could still get an alesis qs8 or yamaha s-80 for only a few hundred more than your casio, and it would still sound a lotbetter. with some better, more professional tones this would sound a lot sweeter then it already is.

also try to get recording so you can hear it in both ears of headphones!

 Sorry about it being mono, I don't have a way to change that unfotuneately.

Yes, money was the issue when I bought it. I was just getting into playing seriously, and it was the best affordable keyboard at the time. It is actually incredible for the price once you dive into what it can do. This clip was more "look at my lead playing" than "look at my patches." This was all done in one take, with me playing the solo over the backing track which was recorded in real time into the keyboard and then played back. That was the reason that I couldn't use better patches, because only one effect can be used at once, so everything beside the lead was limited to cheap MIDI patches.

Either today or tomorrow I hope to get something recorded where I run through all my best patches (doing it for a friend who is interested, but I intend to share it here as well). Overall the Casio actually sounds very nice, especially considering the price. Aside from some preset leads and distorted guitar patches, everything sounds excellent. It's no Kurzweil, but it gets the job done.
What's really great about it is the drawbar organ function. 16 digital drawbars = yummy. I've got some great hammond patches and that lead I used was actually a weak organ with metal distortion on it (layered with a resonant square wave I made).

I am looking into better synths now, but for what I needed it for the Casio met and exceeded all my expectations. Great starter synth (yes, synth. It is programmable to a certain extent, and great to learn that stuff with) and it's been to numerous gigs with me and I only like it more every time. Heck, I even made a halfway decent wannabe monster lead on it the other day.

Anyway, I'll quit rambling now. Thanks for the compliments btw, I appreciate it. :)

Did y'all do this through Skype? 'Cause I was wondering if anyone wanted to try that again.
