View Full Version : korg ms2000b
Is this synth good for rock/prog music??? I mean, can it emulate moog, arp, analogic sound well ???
does someone have it???? what about price??? the vocoder seems so cool..
I've listened to some demos and it seemed much more a dance keyboard. the retro, vintage look rocks..
please, tell me your advices and some other possibilities of similar keys that didn't coast as a moog voyager..
THANKS, SAM

When i tested it in a store, it sounded like on of these trendy dance machines. I don't think it can emulate Moogs or so in a good way. The retro look is cool, but it's cheap material, cheap keys, cheap knobs.
If you want real analog sound, try a Waldorf Pulse rack synth, used for about 200 Euros. 3 Oscillators with Sync and CorssMod, good modulation matrix & monophonic. Great for Prog leads, basses and other sounds. Very cutting sound, sometimes too cutting.

I'm telling you the Alesis ION is an absolute steal and
is going to sound closer than most of those VA dance
machines to real analog synths at a fraction of the price.
Give it a listen.

Oh yeah, I forgot that the new feature of this MS2000B is
the addition of a vocoder. That's a pretty cool feature.

Hi friend,i have a MS2000 and i love this machine, many people think that this symth itīs made for dance and techno music but it depends of your own use on this machine.
The Osc section are really powerfull (2osc + noise + 2 insert signals with sync or ring modulation ) with classic analog waveforms like Saw, PMW, Square, Triangle, CrossMod,Sine,Vox Wave etc. plus the 64 DWGS (digital wave generator system) that you can find in the classic DW-8000.
You can use 2 EG (4 parts x 2) ,2LFO(4 waveforms x2) ,2 virtual patch (modulation matrix 8 source/destiny) and the great MOD. SECUENCE that makes your sound very complex, with this option you can simulate for example a Wave-sequencing with the DWGS or make some temporal changes in your sound like a voltage analog, you have 16 steps to make the modulation changes for each one and then play the changes in secuence for a complez movement of the waves.
In the FX section you have Chorus/Flanger/Rev/Delay (x3) plus Eq and a separate Distortion.
Now my pros and cons.
Pros: Easy of use,its really a friendly machine and the use of the analog knobs are really easy. For progresive leads itīs really incredible and YES you can simulate the moogy sounds or another vintage sounds like some Emerson,Wakeman,Moraz,Wrigth etc sounds. For agresive leads itīs really powerfull and you can make a monsterlead or some other distorted sounds and you always ear the synth as a SYNTH and not as a GUITAR i really love this cause now people cannot confuse the sound of my keyboard with a guitar 8)
And finally my last pro itīs about the step secuencer,itīs really incredible if you want to make a lead and then you can transform into a noise and then into a little sine you can make this easily with the step secuencer, and for really rich and expresive sounds this function are really incredible.
Cons: Well not all in this machine are good and the polyphony are really poor(4 notes) ,this synth itīs not for a "master or principal keyboard" propouse, but if you want a great SOLO keyboard you hace the chance with it.The Fx section itīs too basic, and you dont have many options but this options are a good add, some clavia does not come with FX section,
The knobs look some fragile but i never have problems with the use of them, and i use this really hard, and finally the MS2000B comes with a 128 preset sounds that are more dance oriented but you can create any lead or synth sound that you need and replace all the presets, the MS2000 (the same without the mic jack include) have a presets that are really vintage-progresive oriented even some leads that are awesome (check the lead called Cuttinīthe Edge) or some Rhodes,B3 etc sounds and you can use the same files for single version or "B" version.
Well in my opinion itīs a great board for a FAT lead/bass sounds and for complex pads for example, many people have bad feellings about the sound of the synth but if you know the Korg Z1,the MOSS board or the prophecy you now how this board sound īcause the synthesis, osc, filters mod matrix etc itīs the same in this 3 synths and well my question itīs WHY Rick Wakeman use one of them in his keyboard set ??
simply this machine itīs a really Fatty solo synth. 8)
thanks, the alesis ION rules !!!!! it also has the vocoder, but anyway also the ms2000 seems to be a good synth..
I phoned my store and they've sayd me they've got a ION in store so I'll give it a try...

I'm actually interested in the MS2000. I think it has a
pretty nice VA sound quality to it and is pretty fat.
Guitar Center is selling them for $349 which is a great
price for what it does.

this is offtopic, but WHY ISN'T THERE A KEYBOARD CENTER??????? it always has to be about the guitars, doesn't it!? ...bah...
also unrelated: this is my 600th post!!!
related: i haven't tried any of those keyboards, but i must say i'm suprised to hear that most people consider the ms2000(b) a dance/techno keyboard. i guess i just thought it was a virtual analog synth and only used for that purpose. i guess the only advice i can give you is to just keep trying out each synth until you're SURE which one you want! better try now and make sure you've got the one you want!
good luck!

$200!!! Now that's a great deal. I might consider picking one
up then. Prior to that I had been eyeing the Roland JP 8080.
I love how that piece sounds.
