I picked this up a few weeks ago because of the great reviews this album got.

It's been an on and off journey with this album. At first I was pretty disapointed, expecting something much more progressive in the vains of pain of salvation.

The cheesy lyrics and cheesy riffs made me put this one aside for a while but I felt this uncontrolable urge to keep giving a chance to this album.

And well it turned out for the better. The production on this album is MASSIVE. It's really production and mastering at its best.

The vocals are splendid with Mikael Åkerfeldt and James LaBrie having fabulous exchanges.

Some really great keyboard work on here! Great tones! It's just not in the progressive vein I was waiting for.

I mean this album has cheese but it's very well done cheese and just damn irresistable to listen to.

What did you guys think?

I agree - it is the cheesiest album i've ever heard, but IMO that just adds to its charm. Some of the instrumental solos are absolutely amazing - good enough for me to attempt to tab some of them, and create a lead sound based on Lucassen's.

personally, I cannot stop listening to the Devin Townsend stacked vocals...
"Motion personified alpha"...

I just wish I knew what he was going on about.

Oh, and for the people thinking its cheesy, have you heard any Rhapsody or Dragonforce or anything in that vein? :)
k.

The synth solos you hear that dont suck werent even written or recorded by Vadim, they were done by CLIVE NOLAN!

I'm a casual DF listener so, whatever happened to clive? Got a clip of him playing around somewhere, wasnt bad at all.

Are they good live? I missed them in Australia when they came (namely since i live on an island). Heard many reports of them being too showy and not having things down pat and mucking up badly.

Gotta love hermans hair.

Jwarmen!! No! You should have tried Ayreon's "The Universal Migrator: Part 2.Flight of the Migrator"

It is WAAAAY better. Better singers (in my opinion) and cooler riffs and songs. It's true!

I thought so too for a while, but now whenever I listen to Ayreon, it's either THE, or Into The Electric Castle (The better of the two, IMO).

Now, THAT is cheese :P
