Try the Rainbow Synth - it's a...*thinks*...four oscillator softsynth, working as shareware, with some fairly nice presets on it.

VST is a software plugin format developed by Cubase. The VSTs that people in this thread are referring to are specifically VSTis, or VST instruments. Since they're software, you need a computer to run them on, and since they're plugins, you need some kind of software host to run them in. This could be a sequencer like Cubase or Digital Performer, or one the VST hosts designed specifically to run VST effects plugins and instruments. (There are other formats for effects and instruments plugins, like AU, DX, MAS, RTAS, and more; they work more or less the same way, but each format requires specific support in the host software to be able to run at all.)

The Receptor is a specialized computer designed just to run VST effects and instruments, and it runs its own software that serves as the host for the VSTs.

You also need some kind of controller to control the software instrument, which is usually a MIDI keyboard, but could be MIDI faders, drum pads, wind controllers, or the sequencer itself.

Finally, you need an audio output device so you can hear the sounds produced by the VSTs. This could be built-in, like in the Receptor, or an internal sound card or external FireWire or USB device for the computer.

That's very informative.

Anyone else got any more instruments that are cool/tips?

Search the plugin database here:

KVR Audio (http://www.kvraudio.com/)

for free/shareware VSTs, then download them and try them out. KVR is an excellent resource for plugins.
