View Full Version : Creating 'double-wave' detune LFO on a K2000VP?

Hi

My band has just finished the recording sessions for our new album, and I'm having some problems recreating one of the sounds I used in the studio for live purposes.

In the studio I used a Virus Rack for a sound wich contained a 'double-wave' detuned LFO, and I would like to know if it's possible to create this on a K2000VP?

Technically you can't detune an LFO, since LFOs are modulators and don't directly make sound.

Was this sound a preset on the Virus? If so, what was the name of the patch? We might be able to recreate it if we can get a parameter breakdown of the patch.

For the moment I can't remeber the name of the patch, but I will be back in the studio on tuesday to look it up.

Does anyone know if there's a PC editor for the Virus with a patchlist to go with it for deconstruction? :D

Can you post a clip of the sound in question?

I will be able to post the clip of the sound on tuesday night. I will ask our engineer at the studio to mixdown just the keyboards on the part where the patch is used.

Still waiting on that soundclip.... :P

From the description "'double-wave' detuned LFO" I would guess the patch contains at least two oscillators, with an LFO modifying the fine tuning of at least one of the oscillators, giving an analog-y, fat, swirling sound... does that sound close?

I can't tell you how to do it on a Kurz though :)

Well, there wasn't any time to mix down that part on tuesday night, but we mixed it down yesterday. The problem is that our singer accidently picked up the wrong CD, so for the moment I'm waiting for him to send it over to me.

Drusillus: Yeah, that exactly what I'm after 8) [/u]

Ok, here we go:

The MP3 File (http://www.everbuild.nu/others/track03.mp3)

Note: The sound is not supposed to be distorted.

Here's my thoughts, bear with me I'm still kind of a newbie at sound design but I'm taking a crack at yours:

- Sounds like two oscillators (square waves?), the more prominent starting with a low cutoff frequency, and its cutoff is being modulated by a slow sine or triangle LFO, the second osc is mixed fairly low, starts out with a higher cutoff and its cutoff is being modulated by a faster LFO

- At the end of the clip, the pitch of the second oscillator starts getting detuned by LFO (probably the second LFO) -- you could probably hook that up to aftertouch, so that the pitch doesn't go all wonky until you press hard

Any of you real experts want to tell me if I'm close? :)

Drusillus pretty much nailed it. I'm not so sure about the LFO's modulating the filter cuttoff, I'm not really hearing that. The only thing really missed was that there is a phaser on the patch.

Yeah, that's pretty much it. I only have to figure out how to make the detuning part of the sound... :)
