Hello...
My brother decided to learn how to play electric guitar (overdrive and distortion, and he has 2 years of expierence with acoustic guitar  )
He is using Ibanez 350, BOSS effect pedal MT 1 Metal Zone and a small Vox amp - but this is irrelevant, I think.
The problem is: he just can't do thouse cool overdrive sounds - it sounds just like a dirty acoustic guitar instead. (distortion is working fine).
I think my brother is the problem  is there a special move to play overdriven guitar? Because he just can't do it - but his gear is good enough.
Thank you....

Take it's metal zone and use it with your keyboard!!!
11111111!
(once in a while i take my brother's bass pedals, for the synth bass, and his PROCO You Dirty RAT for the lead sounds  they ar coooool)
Seriusly... it had to start using some pre made settings... he can find it on the boss website i think... or in some little manuals that can find in music shops (they're free)...
regard the playing... electric guitarist almost always use power chords when they play chords...

edit- way to go me, i completely skipped over the guitar >_<
usually with distortion/over drive, it's either one long hit that you let ring out, or short stacatto style playing.
if that makes sense.
as for settings on the pedal.
don't wanna turn the distortion up too high, and don't scoop the mids, unless that ibanez has super hot pickups which it shouldn't.
hopefully this helps

I started out on guitar, and used to own the metal zone when I couldn't afford a decent amp, but that was way back.
I never liked the metal zone, it colors the guitar's original tone (read distroy) and cover it with a brittle distorted tone to the point that it overshadow picking articulation. I think your brother will be better off buying a decent amp, how about one of the recent modelling amps? Vox Tone Lab series rocks!!! That would be my number one recommendation.
A distant second best is to get an overdrive pedal, like Boss SD-1.
Just my $0.02.

Maybe is OT, but NI Guitarrig is realy powerful. I use it on some leads and it's amazing!
My brother tried it with the guitar and is amazing too!

Thanks for your advises. My bro tried to play "faster" (staccato's) and it works - he says...
I think Metal Zone should do for now - he is still a noob  And besides - you have to use pedals on gigs anyway, if you want to change settings fast.
Btw - he knows settings for Distortion/overdrive, so it wasn't the problem.

Ooops, yep, I was refering to the Valvtronix series. I tried it on few occasions and was blown away. They also are pretty cheap imo. Like $240 for the 30 watts.
