Now that I have an actual band again, I've been programming keyboard sounds for an upcoming gig. We're only playing one of our songs because we have a new female vocalist and nothing is ready. Our song looks like it will actually be the hardest to deal with because I used B4 and some orchestral samples.

The other songs are To the Edge, Ghost Woman and the Hunter, Our Truth, and Swamped by Lacuna Coil, March of Mephisto and Abandoned by Kamelot, Going Under and My Immortal by Evanescence, Breaking the Silence by US lol, and closing the show will be The Hero by Queen. :)

The reason I am so excited is... by layering a couple of different kinds of string sounds, I was able to pretty much nail them from each group. The exception being March of Mephisto... they have a pizz in there too, but I went for more of a layered string sound and less attacking...

Also, The Lacuna Coil songs have some funky eastern bell and Rav type sounds, and I was able to nail them all as well. The only thing this keyboard really lacks is effects. Only one effect in a setup is pretty limiting, and the effects that are in it pretty much suck. lol. I had forgotten about that, because I hadn't tried to match industry sounds in so long with it (I've just beein in noodle around mode for a year or so). Oh, the piano is a bit weak by today's standards, and the Hammond sounds aren't there (hence the B4 program lol). But, man... I had totally forgotten how cool this board really is.

We get dazzled by all the bells and whistles of the new boards, but many many many of the sounds in this thing still hold up.

ok.. the organ situation is killing me. Am I stuck with having to use a sample?

Has anyone ever built a decent Sherinnian like Hammond patch in a K2000?

Ha ha... very funny. :)

I'm a guitar player... I don't play keys well enough to justify buying a 4 thousand dollar board. lol

Besides... the Motif ES is the board in my future.

You could try PROGSOUNDS.COM and ask there. Or just google I remember seeing something like TOTAL K2000 commiunity somewhere.

And just some offtopic why is your future synth the motif?

Everytime I play it, I want it. lol. Really, I compare synths pretty extensively when I go to music stores, and the Motif is always the one that sounds the best to my ears, and has the most useful soundset. The Triton is geared towards rap out of the box, and the Motif has the best natural souns (pianos, organs, etc.)

Every recent Korg I've played has awful pianos even compared to my 15 year old K2000.

I guess basically, it seems to be the best overall board for a guitar player who dabbles in keys like myself. I'm not a big programmer, and I need something that I can write with, and do basic programming with (zone splits, effects tweaking, and making combis).

As an added note...

I've been watching Pulse. As I'm sure everyone has known for years, the K2000 is all over that, and was the primary board used on Division Bell. All the effects in my K2000 have this low midrange honk. It's definately not present on the DVD or album. Am I likely correct in assuming that the effects on the keys are seperate units? The lead sounds in particular sound too crisp in thier effects to be the Digitch sounds found in the boards.

And also, he uses a K200 for his piano sounds... did that thing really sound that good or is he triggering something else? Every keyboard I've ever heard from the early 80s did not have any sort of piano sounds like Richard is getting on teh video. If so, it seems that Mr. Kurz was even further ahead than I thought perhaps. :)

Sorry for the double post here, but I wanted to take in all the links and info before I posted.

Thanks for all that for sure. I have the Sweetwater stuff... I found it the other day thanks to Google. But, this computer doesn't have a floppy drive, so I have to put it on a cd and find a computer with a floppy. lol

The article is very cool. A lot for me to take in, but perhaps I can put it to use somehow. I'm pretty dense when it comes to really getting in and messing around with the VAST. I don't have a solid fundamental understanding of how the analoge principles that VAST is based on work to really know what to start tweeking. I could also swear sometimes that I'll change things (lfo, amp, etc. changes) and not hear a bit of difference. lol. I wonder if there is something I'm supposed to do to unlock it or something. lol

That's fine though... really, I very seldom need to tweak that stuff as I've found a host of cool sounds, and the board itself has great stock sounds in it. It's just been organs and a couple of lead sounds I'd like to create to be unique (won't find something online that I'm specifically hoping hasn't been invented yet. LOL).

I think maybe one of the Kurzweil KDFX single rack units might be in my near future to solve my effects problems as far as the reverb and delay eq thing, inability to have independent effects on zone splits, and lack of distortion or rotary simulation in the K2000. I think that will help me get by through college until I can hopefully someday afford a newer board (88 keys no doubt).
