Shine On You Crazy Diamond (http://www.reprehensible.net/~scrap/shineoncombi.mp3).

Thought I'd share some of this with you folks again - this is more or less the final version of the Shine On / Pink Floyd combi that Claudio and I have been working on for the past few months for the Korg Karma. The PCG is complete and has been posted in Patch Exchange for those of you who want to give it a try.

Let me know what you guys think.

Scrap,

Did you record that onto the onboard sequencer or onto a dedicated recorder? What FX did you use? It's very authentic.

Hey Frank. The beauty of it is that it is completely live and uses no sequencing whatsoever - it was created in combi mode. I run my Karma through my mixer, then out to the PC and record audio with Sonar XL 2.0 - this was a one track recording. The crackling in the recording is probably due to me using MME drivers as opposed to WDM or ASIO - I'll have to fix that later.

The Karma has a latch button which can continue to sustain a chord after release. The string fill is being repeated by a Karma module, as well as the subtle bell sounds in the background - see the thread in Patch Exchange for more info on the technical side. The effects are pretty rudimentary - ensemble, pitch shifter, delay reverb. For the synth lead and guitar lead, compressor, amp simulator, and rotary speaker effects are used (Gilmour often ran his guitar through a leslie). The big string sound was created by using 3 layers of programs (pipe organ, two other string programs at different octaves).

Scrap,

I listened to "Shine...." again. I have to say, really nice textures. Did you activate "Karma" using the latch?
Just wondering.

The KARMA function has its own on/off switch. The latch just ensures that a chord within a certain key range will be held after your fingers leave the keys. When a new chord/note is played, the previous chord is immediately cut off. So it doesn't work like your ordinary sustain pedal.

The Karma is really an invaluable tool for live use. I can't wait to be able to use this puppy live someday. ;)
