Has anyone already done this before ?

I guess, you can try to change hardware on your keyboard. All hardware is probably the same on all kind of electronic stuff. But, messing with complecated things like keyboards, ussually ends bad, believe me  , uneless you are very good at electronics, ofcourse...
And are there no USB port? I thought K2600 has USB, then you can buy an zit/ flash-card reader, without any risk

I remember, there is a standard DVD player on X-box, not to mention all other parts. X-box is has the same construction as a PC. - an example

I've never actually cracked open a K2600, so take all this with a grain of salt... This is all theoretical.

While you cannot attach a zip drive to the actual floppy drive interface (floppy disks use 36 pin cables and all zip drives are either ATAPI or SCSI), I know that the optional internal hard drive is SCSI, so theoretically, you could attach an internal SCSI zip drive (if you can find one) to the hard drive cable (SCSI supports 7 devices per channel, so you shouldn't have a problem even if you have the internal hard drive). The internal zip drives are all standard 3.5" form factor, so if the floppy drive is the same, you shouldn't have a problem mounting it.

There are only a couple caveots I can think of.

One, If the floppy drive is somehow required in the boot process or for OS updates, physically removing the drive might cause some problems in the future. But if you can do all loading thru SCSI, I don't see how that could be a problem.

The other is that I'm not 100% sure how the K2600 would handle removable media on it's SCSI bus. I would think though, if it can handle media removal on either an external Zip or Jaz drive, that probably wouldn't be a problem.

yann,

I have seen units that lost the floppy drives in lieu of Zip or Jaz drives. The problem lies in a couple of different areas (as I see it anyway). Zip drives are notorious for the 'click of death' when used with samplers. Some guys have no problems whatsoever with their units. I've have 5 Zip drives over a period of 10 years with my K2500/K2600's. Once they start clicking, they'll freeze up the entire SCSI buss everytime you select their ID #. Thank God for internal hard drives. The kit is $99 retail, and www.scsiforsamplers sells the internal hard drive for around $90 -- so for $200, you would be set up with a 9GB internal.

jeebustrain (and all), there is no trouble loading OS updates, object files, etc., etc. onto your K from another removable source (in fact, I transfer the newest versions of everything to my internal hard drive from a Castlewood Orb drive these days, and load from there). The only external media drive that WILL NOT load these files is CDROM. Hope this helps!
