Does anyone know how to assign a sustain-pedal function on the Roland VK-7? I've tried midi-ing another board (out) to the Roland (in), and can get a sustain (damper) using the controller board, but it won't work on the Roland itself. Thank you very much.

Connect your sustain pedal to 'Control Pedal 1' on the back of the VK7.
Press 'Edit' and then 'System Basic'
Use the arrow buttons to see the various menus until you get to one that lets you assign a function to 'Ext1'
Set the function of Ext1 to 'Main Hold' (or maybe Orch Hold...I can't remember)
You can also change the polarity for the sustain pedal in this menu if needed.
I own a VK8m now, but I really enjoyed my VK7.

DUDE!!! I don't know who or where you are, but I love you (man)!. I was driving my wife nuts with my constant mumblings and moanings about how I just can't figure this stupid thing out! She said, "You try going online, yet?" Like, what a concept!
I really thank you very much, even before I actually follow your directions and get the sustain pedal working.
The VK-7 belongs to Walter Jay, the singer/leader of the band, Walter Jay and Texas Flood, who just hired me last month. He is really into Stevie Ray Vaughan, and the band does a hour-long tribute to him. I've been happy with my Korg X5 and X5d for many years now (especially because they're so light and good reliable performance boards), but he wants me to learn the ins and outs of Hammond artistry. I got a long way to go (like weaning myself off the sustain pedal, for instance), and I've picked up a Jimmy Smith 2-CD set to train myself. There's a lot more to the drawbars than I suspect, and you've probably forgotten more than I'll ever learn. I bought a cheapass volume pedal, and already I can see I'm going to have timbre and level problems. The controller board I mentioned originally is actually a Korg SP200 that I just bought last year (love the action of this one). Being a die-hard Korg fan, I'd suspect that the CX-3 is the one I'll be going after next. One just sold on eBay last week for around eight hundred.
Once again, Mr. David Cox, my eternal gratitude to you for helping me out. Feel free to email me at gazzelle @ comcast . net anytime, dude!
