thanks again for all your words of wisdom

In the end, i went completely in the other direction and

i just bought a mint 2nd hand Korg I30

messed around on it in the shop for abit... then the owner (its a small shop) came and actually SHOWED me things..

It sounded freakin amazing to my ears... the guy uses one himself at home so he knew how to get the sounds i was describing.. also the offer of free help with it if i'm stuck and even lessons on it! (and a 3 month warranty)

He tentatively noodled on it for a good while, showing me basic chords and sounds, how to combine 2 patches... then i said 'ok i want it'

So he hits a synth lead patch and gos all rick wakemen for about 5mins doing the catherine parr solo bit and others :P

then he helped me choose (a free) book and chucked a stand in for me... no manuals (couldnt find it in the shop, but they do have them) yet but they are getting dropped off for me on monday.

I ended up tesing: I30, X5D, Juno-D, Fusion HD, Korg Karma

Loved the i30 and didnt want to blow double the cash for the Karma or Fusion..

Gonna be lots of tweakin and fiddling for many nights :P
