I've seen one after another questioning what is a correct int. drive for their beloved K2500 /K2600.
Unfortunately 99% of the time the answer given is a link to
Peter Schouten
Pyramid Sound Productions

Hmmmm, he's very expensive IMO

I need a low powered 3.5" 9gb scsi drive (for 4x2gb partitions)
I was shown a 9gb U2 10k rpm drive recently but passed on it because I don't want the extra heat that drive would generate.

In the past I've tried out different scsi drives and they brought the scsi chain to a crawl so I returned them.

Who if anyone knows exactly what to get for an int. drive?

i've bought a stock of scsi items on ebay.. 2hdd (one of 2gb and one of 18gb), a cd-rw, a cd-r, a zip drive external, two external boxes and so on for few bucks.. my k2500r successfully run with both 2gb and 18gb hard drive partitioned. the last hard disk can only by used by 50%.

Great. You couldn't be a little lore specific?
Brand, speed, adapters, model number...

QUANTUM ATLAS IV 18GB Ultra160/LVD/SE
SEAGATE ST52160N 2GB

For the 18gb one, you need a LVD->Narrow Adapted for correct cablage.

I too have been picking stuff up off e-bay and it can be very cheap. I just got a 2gb drive for 99p (about $1.50). Will be fitting it tommorrow.

The thing's i found to be careful of are.

1. I'd look for one with a 50pin connection, although the newer large drives can be fitted with an adaptor, room is very tight (at least in my K2500).

2. Make sure you can terminte the drive itself (this was my problem with the first drive i had (which i got for free from work). It had no jumpers to terminate it.

Other than that i don't think you have to go specific makes too much. For you info the one i picked up was a Seagate Barracuda.

Good point about the 50 pin connector! :D

Reguarding termination, there's a switch on the back of my K2500 which turns the termination on or off.

In my current scsi chain I have:
My K2500 (scsi ch#6)>Floppy>Int 250mb (scsi ch#4)>Zip 250mb (scsi ch#5)>cdrom (scsi ch#3) the cdrom is last in my scsi chain so it is terminated.

The termination switch on the back of your K2500 is not what i mean. When you fit a hard drive you'll need to put that switch in the disable possition. Then you need to set termination on the internal drive itself. Often there is a jumper on the drive to do this however on many of the newer drives where they are intended for hotswapping etc. These jumpers do not exist and there is no way to terminate.

Now I'm really confused.

OK let me have another go :)

The way i understand it is this. You need to have both ends of the SCSI chain terminated. The switch on the back of the Kurz you refer to allows you to set the kurz as terminated so that when no internal drive is fitted the Kurz is terminated as the last piece in the chain.

Now if you want to fit an internal drive, you have to disable the termination on the back of the Kurz and set the internal drive to be terminated i.e. that last peice in the chain.

Since you already have an internal drive i'm assuming this is terminated (that is usually the default setting anyway). Any new drive you add in place of your current drive will need to be able to be terminated also.

The upshot is just make sure you buy a drive that can be terminated with a jumper.

Ok, Thanks for explaining that. That info explains alot. 8)

After all my big mouthing, i've got a problem with this myself. I'm trying to fit my internal drive. Thing is i'm pretty sure the termination switch on the back of the Kurz isn't functioning. Is there another jumper i need to change inside the board somewhere to get this to work.

This is what I understand.
The K2000, K2500, K2600, require a scsi type I or scsi type II drive.

I'm not sure if scsi Ultra 2 drives work?

This is what the launch pad says

"You will be fine if you buy any of the following type drives:
SCSI-2
SCSI-2 F(ast)
SCSI-2 F(ast)W(ide)
SCSI-3 U(ltra1)W(ide)
"You cannot use SCSI-3 Ultra2 or Ultra3 since these are LVD (Low Voltage
Differntial) and use a completley different signalling.

Well now i've actually tried my hard drive i have to say be VERY careful about what you buy.

I got a 2gig Seagate Barracuda drive to work with my K2500. It has all the appropriate jumpers and power ratings etc yet it is still not recognised by the Kurz. This has completely put me off looking for another drive unless i can get one that is guaranteed to work.

The most annoying thing for me is i laid out good money for the drive mounting kit which is now useless unless i get a drive that will work.

Seagate Barracuda and Cheetah asre LVD drives.

I just won a IBM Ultrastar 9 GB 50pin scsi DGHS-09Z

I'll report here when I attempt to get it going.
(I already have a 250mb hd in there so I'll just swap 'em)

Hopefully I can figure out the termination jumper stuff because it probably doesn't come with instructions.

No it's not LVD. Those are only newer drives (i think with 80 pins). Mine is an old 50 pin drive.

Good luck with your drive. Hopefully you can find specs on the net, the terminations jumpers are not usually obvious, you'll need a reference.

Success!!!
After years of hunting for a suitable 9g scsi drive I bought one on eBay.ca
and the seller was just minutes away from where I live.

I didn't need any specs because the drive had the labels explaining the pin out and I didn't need that because it hooked up to a 50 pin cable and a 5pin power cable.

Anyways, opening this K2500xs is a bitch. Hate it.
Hopefully that's the last time! :) My back is sore.

The drive I bought that works is
* IBM UltraStar 9 GB 50 pin scsi DGHS -09Z

Because I already had the hard drive kit installed, all I needed to do was swap the old drive out and the new drive in. Reformat and Partition and
YES! :D

Congratulations!

I've had my Kurz open so many times lately that i have it down to a fine art.

I'm gonna have to scour e-bay again.

Now i have a dilema.

I can buy another cheapish drive which SHOULD work, or i can buy the same model as you but it is expensive ($50ish inc shipping).

Not sure i wanna throw anoth $50 at this.

Rexx

Remember $50 is a lot cheaper then the $300+ some Kurz users pay.

I love the speed of this drive so much compared to the Zips, Floppies and cdroms. Plus I have 4 partitions of 2g.

Now I want to buy more of these exact drives and put two drives in one scsi external case.
I want to have an organized collection of samples that can be used as desired and backup cdroms to HD but most importantly I want to get into sequencing with Setups and try doing some resampling of midi + audio.
