I know I know, maybe not for everyone, but I still find it very cool. Check this out:

wow, thats an excellent patch. had there not been a vid to go along w/ it i would have believed that it was an actual guitar.
what keyboard is that specifically?

how are you doing that??? are you using some program to allow you to use lower notes on the keyboard to switch multisamples? because it seems like the same keys can have different functions and you hit some low notes (sometimes a key is a regular note, sometimes it's a squeal, sometimes a trill, etc). that is really cool...and, yeah, what keyboard is that?

Where is this patch from? I don't remember the name of the board, but I think these were just controllers.

This actually sounds like a real guitar.

Yes, these are MIDI controlllers CME UF series. So where's the patch from?

very good sounding samples and assignment. Seems to be played on Kontact using a custom LPC script for phrasing and performance. Awesome :)

Hey hey.....as much as I like these to be my hands, they are not :)
This video clip I found on the web from a company that sells guitar samples, the company website is the one that appears at the end of the clip. I think it's www.prominy.com if I'm not mistaken.
It's uber-realistic, and the playing is just superb, I just didn't care too much for the iron maiden kind of tone, it's not high on my list, but that's just my preference.
Good that you liked it too.
Edit: As Axiom explained, it's a guitar sample for Kontakt 2, Quite expensive though, but I guess it doesn't get any better than this.

That was my first thought when I listened to it, very Iron Maiden-like! I love it. Wish I had that patch.

I'm rather interested in what that guy is doing with the keys in the bottom two octaves - it doesn't sound like he's playing notes with them.

Yeah you're right. I think the notes on the high octaves are for speacial guitar efx like trilling or pinch harmonics..etc. It's not the first time I see this, The OASYS Karma 2 guitars utilizes the higher octave(s) for strumming/articulation effects. There was a series of videos by Stphen Kay demonstrating these features.
Best.

I think I saw this video a few months back... were I not a guitarist, I'd probably be really excited! :P It's key-switching he's doing. Basically in these fancy pants ultra-extensive sample libraries, there will often be a bunch of different multi-samples for the same instrument: for instance, different articulations, different ornaments, etc. The things are mapped out so that (typically in the bottom octave) there are keys that are like a switch, to a different sample.
In strings, for instance, there will often be bow up and bow down, at different dynamic levels, fast/slow attacks, and things like trills, slides, etc. In the guitar one, it probably opens up access to specific banks of chords too. Lots of craziness, lots of versatility, and lots of fun :)

is he just triggering phrases frm the sample library? thenits more about learning to use the library than about guitar on kb technique

Well I also would have bought that library in a heart beat were it not that I can play guitar also. It sounds superb. Although he's triggering phrases, you can also just play the multi layered samples normally. Personally, being able to get that quality guitar sound with normal key playing and being able to hit harmonics via velocity switching would be enough expression I'd need.
VSL also do a similar guitar library also.

I've got to agree. And speaking as someone who plays the guitar as well, I'd say that clip sounded reasonably authentic, but not 100%. At the end of the day, you're only chopping up and triggering someone else's previous performance.
I've never understood this holy-grail "emulate the guitar on the keys" thing, frankly. There's so much you can do on a synth that you can't do on a guitar (and vice versa, of course) so why spend time re-inventing the wheel?
That said, I admit it's easy to sit back and say that from a position where I already know how to play the guitar... If you don't, then samples are your only option to get those sounds - other than actually learning the guitar

So are you saying that he's not really playing that, just manipulating pre-recorded phrases? I guess I don't understand how it's possible to play this live if it's not normal playing. A little help?

I think his usage of the term 'phrase' was a misnomer - I believe the word he was looking for was 'sample'.
Was that in response to me? I don't think I actually said "phrase"...
Nevertheless, I'm probably being pedantic. You could argue that playing any rompler or sampler is doing the same thing, but that's absurdly reductive.
What I'm really saying boild down to the old chestnut of "If you want the sound of a guitar, it's probably easiest and most effective to play the guitar"

No, I meant 'Axe2Grind'. Probably should've quoted it :P
It's true that for the most part, if you want to sound like a guitar, get a guitar, but I still think it's very cool that there's such a realistic VST available now - if your guitarist had to duck out for a gig or two, you could easily take over, and it also means that three piece pub bands with keys, drums and bass no longer have to play more unusual stuff.
