I know it's a Kurz-heavy board, but do any of you guys own/play a Yamaha Motif ES?

Yes. Outstanding board. I love the piano, guitar and
synth sounds especially. Very punchy!

I have an S90, which is quite similar to the ES except without a sequencer or sampler.

My Motif ES arrived today -- I was just surprised I guess by how few of them there seem to be on the forums compared to Kurzweils. I guess it's because of the legacy patches with Kurzweil. I can see how it would be a lot easier to get a "Dream Theater" sound out of existing Kurz patches than it would be to create your own instrument on the Motif. Is that the basic reason or are there other things I'm overlooking?

I love the piano sound on the Motif ES8 - it's the first thing that struck me as awesome. It's the best stock piano sound I've heard - I prefer it to the one Jordan uses.

I agree. I think those who have criticized the Motif ES piano sound are actually referring to the Motif. The ES has Yamaha's new piano sound which is the best I've heard. Of course, I don't like any of the stock synth leads as much as Jordan's and I have no idea how to go about mimicing his.

Went there weeks ago before deicing to get the board.

61 key Motifs have such awesome action. There's enough to them that they almost feel weighted, so it feels good to play piano on it (it's just a little light but not that bad) but it's light enough that you have that synthy feel that's nice to have for certain sounds.
It's like the perfect median for weighted/non-weighted action. I love it. 8)

Not for me... I really wanted the weighting. I played with the ES6 and ES7 in the store but the 88 is a lot nicer to play.... but a real bitch to lift.

The Motif ES 6/7 have the best synth weighted action ever IMO. They are not so light that your fingers hit other keys, but they are light enough so that you can play incredibly fast (especially after playing weighted boards all day :D ).
