View Full Version : WB Dream Theater Keyboard Anthology Info

Ok,

As many of you may have noticed from the Wizard's Log recently, there is a new keyboard anthology book on the way very soon. Since it is almost finished, I thought I would post more specfic info for the book. First of all, the song list is:

Metropolis Pt. 1: The Miracle and the Sleeper
Wait for Sleep
Learning to Live
6:00
Scarred
Overture 1928
Through My Words
Fatal Tragedy
Beyond This Life
Finally Free
The Great Debate
excerpts from Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence (more info down below)
Endless Sacrifice
Vacant
Stream of Consciousness

Hopefully, this will provide some satisfaction for all of you who have been waiting for some quality transcriptions of Dream Theater songs. All the songs were transcribed by myself, with tremendous assistance by Jordan Baker (Bakerman), who has faithfully edited all the transcriptions to make sure there are no mistakes anywhere!!!! :D Jordan Rudess is also looking over all the transcriptions and providing fingerings for some of the more technical sections.

One of the other new additions to this book will be a new lead notation style that I have been experimenting with on the new Online Conservatory. Essentially, this notation tries to convey all the necessary information needed to play a keyboard lead; namely, sounding pitches, physically played pitches, and controller info such as the pitch wheel and ribbon.

With regards to the excerpts from Six Degrees, we are including the most important keyboard sections from About to Crash through Solitary Shell. In general, this covers many of the main themes present in the songs as well as the keyboard leads.

I think this book is a very exciting prospect for keyboardists! Jordan's personal involvement in the project and his assistance in providing MIDI's and patches mean that this should be one of the most accurate transcription books to date. I will post more info regarding the book's release once that is finalized.

Just to add my two cents - I've witnessed the creation of this book and you all are gonna love this - Chris and Jordan (Baker) have spent a tremendous amount of time and energy ensuring that this will be an incredible product. Wait till you guys see some of the notation for the solos - it looks like someone just threw black ink all over the page! The accuracy is astounding - one thing in particular that I freaked out at when I saw it is the "psycho" part in Stream of Conciousness, which contains 64th note 9-tuplets at one point! JR personally went over a lot of the stuff with Chris a few weeks ago while he was out here in AZ and to have his direct involvment in the process is really gonna put the icing on the cake with regards to how good the scores are...

Chris summed up the book nicely so I'll just say that I've had a lot of fun working on it and think you'll all like it too. I could use phrases like "best book ever" but I'll post a sample and let the work speak for itself:

http://s92612683.onlinehome.us/keybooksample.jpg

Time signatures, notes, dots, vibrato, it's all there. I give this book 5 out of 5 stars. It's the best book ever. I would recommend it to a friend.

I'd like to add that it's an amazing work. I can't believe all they've done. Incredible! Fantastic!

I mean, c'mon. Really. How in the WORLD could this be a bad book? I mean, there's a VIBRATO MARKER THERE!!! WOW!!

You guys are going to be amazed with this peice of work.

I'm simply in shock.

Actually I haven't seen it yet, but that vibrato marker impressed me. Unlike those Shinko ones... Those were HARDLY impressive whatsoever!.

Hi!
What good news!!!! I bought the first Anthology book and I'm very pleased with it (specialy the songs transcribed by guys here ;-)).
I dreamed of this kind of book for ages!
So thank you so much for your work guys!
Is it possible to join with the book notation files (I think you have done it with Sibelius) as a CD or through a secured server? I joined the OC few weeks ago and I'm very pleased with MP3, notation (PDFs, I would prefer sibelius or Finale files too ;-)) and midi...
Keep on the good work!
I will buy thses book the day of its release for sure!
MindCrime.
PS : Wait for sleep and Beyong This Life : waow!!! I did transcriptions of WFS and parts of BTL for me but having the REAL ones : waow waow waow!!!
PPS : Dear Jordan Baker, a HUGE thank you for your midis. A little question about BTL solo : as I imported it into notation app, the solo is in 8/8 : don't you think it's 4/4 as written in the guitar tab edition of SFAM?

ROCK ON!!!

Can't wait, I was a bit dissappointed by the mistakes that were in the Full Score Anthology. The only accurate transcriptions in that book came from these guys.. I always wondered why they didn't got the oppertunity to do the entire full score anthology... but hey... This will make the Full score anthology fade to black... EXCELLENT!!!

maJ estY,

I think the book assumes a certain level of proficiency on the instrument... (you are trying to play Dream Theater after all!) There's not going to be fingerings included for every single thing. The most difficult stuff that Chris, bakerman, and JR think people will have the most trouble trying to learn are the sections where you'll find fingerings. I'm not a keyboardist myself, but I assume that fingerings on keyboard are kinda subjective the same way they are on guitar - more than one way to skin a cat in other words. :D

Probably not too likely on the downloadable scores thing- It's up to Warner Bros. how they want to make it available (publishing rights) and for now it's just the book.

The part with 8/8 in the midi is alternating 9/8 and 8/8- I used 1/2 the tempo of the book which had 4/4 5/5 4/4 4/4 for that section. I don't remember why I did that instead of 9/8 4/4, I guess it was easier to change only 1 # of the time sig every bar.

There are other DT songs that are possible for newbies. IMO, there are allot of them. I found that you just have to spend time on certain stuff. Like the DOE ragtime solo, i could barely play it at 100bpm, but i gave it a couple of weeks and brought it up to speed! i think if your looking for DT songs that you can pick up right off the bat, you may be limited. but if you spend some time with them and enjoy it while doing that, you may suprise yourself! i did  id hate to repeat the cliche, but practice makes perfect! :D

Im reallay looking forward to see the riffs jordan is playing along with the guitar. That is something I am interessted in. Sure the other things are also cool, but sometimes when JR plays the riff with JP you are not sure if the keyboard is playing, especially on the new album (maybe because of the mix!)

Up...

Not much new to report here- I haven't heard an official release date yet, but we're real close to finishing all the transcription/editing work, so in a matter of days it will be up to Warner Bros. to set a date and get it produced and out there, as we wait with everyone.

Marc- JR's playing along with about 95% of the riffs if there's not another independent key part- off the top of my head the only ToT riffs he doesn't double are the first part of AIA before the tempo change, the "Come to me my friend" part of TDS, the new tempo ES riff right after the 2nd chorus, and the first time the ITNOG heavy riff occurs (drums enter).

Thanks Bakerman!

But how did you hear all the "guitar" parts he is playin? I mean some times its relay hard to make it out if there is a keyboard doubling the guitar.
Or did Jordan give you some hints?

marc

Bakerman
04-01-2004, 03:25 AM
We have keyboard-only mixes of a lot of songs and for most of the ones JR played on, MIDI files as Chris mentioned. The MIDIs don't always have all the parts and sometimes have stuff that's definitely not on the album, so there's some work involved in just deciding what the real parts are in the first place.

Helpful tools aside, I think it's still possible to pick out a lot of the doubled riffs right from the CD if you listen for a click or buzz or anything you wouldn't expect to hear consistently from a guitar playing a riff. AIA has the keys mixed to the left on most of the riffs, so if you try panning back and forth you can compare and see if you can hear what it adds to the sound.

Thanx for the answer.

The only thing I wonder now, If I am supposed to ask that, dont you have a regular job?
I mean hey, your transcribing all that stuff (and Im sure you have some kind of deadline for it). So do you seriously have a job beside?

I mean the transcriptions I made just took me hours! :!:

marc

by the way: do you need a cover artwork for that stuff?

Bakerman
04-01-2004, 09:59 AM
Right now I don't really have another job but I'd be glad to share some details about my recent work and plans for the near future. (Typing this now as I've finished the post, it's longer than I planned but I'm glad you asked, it made me think a little more about a few things.)

I've been doing quite a few things for Chris & Ryan/Tabs' company (Progressive Transcriptions) over the past few months including songs for JR (DT cover songs + some ToT key parts), some piano/vocal sheets for a musical, assorted other little projects, and of course editing this book. I applied (sent in requested audition transcription) to work for Guitar One magazine a few weeks ago and I heard back, but it wasn't a real answer- they were just letting me know they got it and will call again sometime (or not I guess).

I should mention that Chris put the most work into the book- I just looked over and edited stuff, except for the ES mallet/organ/lead solos and the SoC piano/lead section which I happened to have done already for JR, so those same ones will be in the book. The last I heard was that we'd be listed in the same credit like "transcribed by" or "transcribed & edited by...", so now you have that fun fact of excactly who did what.

As for other stuff, I do some things for the township when needed since my friend's dad is the parks/rec commissioner. Working at the hockey rink/rec center in the winters and doing some spring/summer jobs like clearing trees for various reasons, keeping xc ski trails and the beach/park area on a nearby lake looking good, stuff at the ballfield.

I'll probably go to the resort I've worked at before and see if they're doing any major repairs or roofing and work a few weekends there over the summer too, but I don't really want to be up there 5-6 days a week (an hour away from here) like the other years. Sometimes it just sucks when you know there's something going on with your friends back home that one day of the week but you have to work the next morning. My family has a cabin on the same lake 2 miles down the road so that works out nicely for having a place to stay.

Band situation: I would have liked to keep gigging with my first real band but we haven't played in over a year since everyone's been kind of busy doing different stuff, the singer had his 2nd kid and bought a house 3 hours away, etc... I ran into a drummer I know a couple weeks ago and he said that he got a whole CD of material recorded (he plays gtr/bass/keys/sings too and recorded it along w/ the bass player/singer from his old band), and was looking to book some gigs for the summer and asked if I wanted to learn the stuff and play gtr with them.

So there's the basic story of what's going on for me right now- I'm hoping that the transcribing jobs keep coming in, and if the other things work out that would be nice, especially the band. Last summer I worked nights at Walmart and ended up not doing a whole lot other than sleeping during the day, or sitting around in the evenings thinking "damn, only x hours until I have to leave for work". I barely remember anything specific from May-August other than my 21st birthday, waterskiing once, and staying a couple days at my friend's cabin. Not to say that it was terribly depressing or tough or anything like that, but I'm definitely going to make a point of doing something with friends whenever I have free time this summer, playing more music, writing some songs, playing scrabble  , and if I start to run out of money then I have no choice but to find another job but I'd like to not worry about that until late summer/fall, and maybe then the transcribing work will be going nicely and I'll be more sure I want to keep doing it for some time.

To Jordan (Bakerman):

Well somehow I m happy you dont work cause that would mean that your just way to f**** good in music when you really have the time to transcribe that stff beside you job.
Well and otherwise its sad your not happy though.

But hey! I am working all day long and have to manage with my music(own stuff), my band, my friends and my girlfriend. So its kind a hard too.
No time to do anything else.

Hmm the stuff you said about not beeing realy in a band made me think of something.
Maybe you have a little bit time and maybe you also would be interested in making some music. A year ago I had the idea of composing some keyboard oriented music. But I thought it would be interesting to do it with someone else. Ive got a little studio (Computer/Cubase SX2/Korg Triton/KN200/GEM Promega2/variety of sampling programs and VST instruments)
So maybe your are interested in sharing files and creating some great stuff together.

Okay, so after reading this thread I'm really excited...and maybe I missed it but I have a few questions...

When do you think it's possible this will be out?
How much?
MIDI cd with this? or some type of audio cd to play along with?

This is going to be freaking awesome I can't wait...btw I have a question will you be putting in the whole songs or just specific parts of the songs?

Also, does anybody have accurate notation for the opening to Learning To Live (if not all of it?) the midi on DT.net is badly arranged and I can't split the tracks.

1. No release date yet - that's up to Warner...

2. Should be around the same amount as guitar books are - I'd guess $24.95.

3. No CD included - that gets into a whole quagmire of legal problems because the other guys in the band would have to make royalties off it etc.

4. Learning to Live is in the book and should be as close to fully accurate as it's ever gonna get... ;)

Yes, there are patch names throughout every song, and indications when a patch or layer sounds an extra octave higher/lower.

I should have said projected month rather than date, since there's nothing final set by WB yet. I'm not sure if books are always released on a certain day of the week like CDs or just whenever they get shipped, but hopefully beginning of July will end up meaning within the first week.

Should not be too much of a challenge given the many resources such as previous DT books, previous MIDIs and Bakeman's patience and time to transcribe every note. However, I am looking forward to the JR era transcriptions.

Those piano solos will be in there, plus some other synth parts. The rest of the book will have piano, synth, everything, full songs. Not sure on the price, probably around $25. Here are the sections of SDOIT included if you're interested. Please don't hate the book if a part you like was excluded :-)

also, is the book notation or something like that, because is u go to http://jordanrudess.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=2617&highlight=anthology
then someone says "or this is an example of what the new anthology book will be like". of course what is on that page is no possible to play, i dont know exactly what it is, what will this book be like, just normal score for keyboard surely (with extra modulation marks and stuff et)????

It's standard notation with lines above indicating pitch wheel movement to make things a little more clear on held bends and stuff like that. Not quite as complex looking as that joke transcription.

It will have sheet music of all keyboard parts & vocals in songs listed by Chris in the first post; all our transcribing/editing work is done; some parts are hard to play but we always tried to make it as readable as possible; Warner Bros. is releasing the book and will be the ones to set a final release date; early July is still the goal from what I've heard; I am kind of sick of looking at these songs and have about 2/3 of the parts memorized without having tried any of them on a keyboard; the fastest rhythm notated is 64th note 9:8 tuplets at 7:20 of Stream of Consciousness; the slowest rhythm notated is probably something Kevin Moore played; the book will be purchased by anyone reading this post if they know what's good for them; I know Jordan I've known him for like 1.5 years; buying the book would be a good idea if you want to learn some of the songs; any questions regarding notation details will be gladly answered by someone here, possibly me, if you happen to get stuck on anything after buying it; if it sells well they'll probably decide to do a Volume 2 which would be good for everyone involved.

I would recommend it to a friend.

wow, notes are uncommon in music

If you can find other books published by Warner Bros. in the local music store, you can definitely order a copy there if they're not already getting a few to keep it in stock. That might be the thing to do if you can go there now and ask someone to watch for the official date and order/hold one for you.

Ok,

I finally got the official word regarding the upcoming release of the Key Anthology. The book should be available in 2-3 weeks (sorry no specific date) and will retail for $24.95.

It's great to see so much interest in this book! Hopefully, the Key Anthology will do well and we can do another!

in chilean money that's like $18,000 pesos not including the shipping that from usa it's not very cheap.

in the end i'll end paying m,ore than $30,000 (35-45 dollars)

$24.95 isn't that bad, I'm sure the Full Score Anthology was more than that... plus, with the exchange rate at the moment, that's less than £14, so ain't gonna complain about that. Someone alert me once it's available to buy from Amazon? :)

Just so you know...

The release date is not being determined by us - once we finished the book it became WB's issue as to when it actually comes out. We're just reporting what WB has told us - SUPPOSEDLY, and that's a big supposedly, we're going to have copies to sell at Keyfest this weekend, but again that's all hinging on WB actually getting the books to us...

17 USD for shipping&delivery ??? I just checked it myself, for I couldn't believe it. With such shipping&delivery costs, I'll rather wait till it becomes available elsewhere.

The book sales price is largely a bargain considering the delivered quality, but I don't see any sense to pay 17 USD for shipping&delivery which takes over 2 weeks (or even more likely 3-4 weeks). Doesn't seem to be a serious Internet distributor to me (at least not when it comes to distributing "worldwide" as they claim). I remember JR's ex-distributor Mediusvision, THAT was a quality distributor, 2-3 days it took and shipping costs were only 5 USD.
