Do you try to express a feeling?
Do you try to describe something?
Do you try to express a precise idea (of any kind: political social ecc)?
This question arose in my head after hearing for the 10000000 time Ignotus per Ignotum by planet X (Sooo wonderful) I think theay really succeded in describing the terror, the hopes and the fascination that human beings have to face when they find themselves in front of something unknown.
Waiting for your thoughts! :)

When I put my fingers on the keyboard.....
I try to let them go.....
I try to pull out what I have deep inside.....
It's not a theory....It's not a project.
IT'S A FEEL

JackJens, you just said exactly what I think and many others do! Allthough I have often the problem of falling into the same patern again. There used to be a topic on that, right? :)

When wanting to express a feeling.
Or shred the ass out of my guitar. ;)
Sometimes I step through some preset sounds, and when I find something nice I often just play and listen to it, wondering what comes next or just enjoying the sounds that come from within.

Well, this poll SHOULD HAVE something like «It depends, but generally I mix them all». Wich is what happens to me... I try to describe feelings and aply opinions and politics.
Or an "other".. I haven't really discovered putting emotion into my music yet, except on select rare occasions. I'm still looking for my inspiration.

Often when I improvise, I'm playing what my mood is. I think of my own music as a piece of my heart or soul that I'm sharing. I guess that sounds a little pretentious...but the tone and color are all related to what I feel at the time. Often I will play in a minor key, but the piece will sound hopeful. Or sometimes just downright dark. If I'm feeling carefree, maybe a major key with a lot of basic tonic chords. In my mind, each chord and rhythm and dynamic change has a feeling or emotion that ties in with it. And I use that to voice what I'm feeling.

Music moves me like nothing else. Especially in instrumental music where everything heard can be left open to interpretation, I like to write themes, melodies and harmonies that move me. If I am in a rather rambunctious mood, I will tend to gravitate towards more aggressive rhythms and dissonant harmonies/sonorities.
But I'm usually pretty happy and jolly so my music reflects that.

Out of those three, definitely a feeling. But I also have a different goal: the music itself, to make it fun to listen to. I think this is coupled with emotion though, because I try to write/play harmonies and melodies that are moving/fun to listen to.

Sure, I noticed when I listened to the samples in your site. Good stuff though, there was a topic in the old forum but I didn't have time to check as I was busy. But I did later on, so I tell you now: you rock!!!
