Dream Theater currently is the only band i have any degree of listening satisfaction with, and as much as i love all of the DT i have, i do need something new.

So can someplease recommend me a band similar to DT, Symphony X ETC. Prog Metal that does have a keyboard in it.

Thanks!

Some suggestions:

Lord of the Mushrooms - a mix of old school prog rock and metal.
Circus Maximus - another new band playing old school prog rock stuff with 80s style vocals.
Pagans Mind - They're closer to power metal than prog but their 2005 release was full of key/guitar riffing.
Andromeda - very proggy band with an excellent keyboardist.

Pain of Salvation: Great swedish band, to me, it's like no other prog metal band around. Gildenlöw's vocals are just so versatile it's incredible, and the style of the rest of the members it's awesome.

POS is one of the few "prog" metal bands that doesnt sound totally cheesy and lame. They dont really fall into all the cliches that other bands do and they write really cool music. You cant really go wrong with any of their albums but The Perfect Element is probably most people's favorite.

Everygrey is decent too.

EDIT: Oh, and Cairo is pretty cool too. But theyre not as metally. They kind of take some of the old ELP and UK sound and update it with like guitar hero type stuff (but in a good way). I only have Conflict & Dreams but I like it a lot.

I'm not so much fond of prog metal, but I do really like Arena and Theshold, who both count as prog metal. I assume by saying prog metal, you're excluding more mainline prog bands like Porcupine Tree and Higher Ground but if not, they're great too.

Ayreon, especially the latest album The Human Equation.

Opeth - probably at the moment, the most proggiest metal band around IMO. VERY heavy, very melodic at times, some elements of jazz in places. The one major turnoff to most people that don't like them is the fact that there are cookie monster vocals (growling), as well as great clean vocals. Oh, and the average song length is longer than DT's so they must be more prog than DT! ;)

I would check out the newest Opeth album "Ghost Reveries", or "Blackwater Park" first. And by that, I mean, download them, if you like them, then buy them, if not, delete them.

Opeth is really great! Especially their album "Deliverance".
If you are interested in Jazz & Blues you should try "Damnation"

But my favorite Band is PAIN OF SALVATION! They are just incredebly great! I was on 2 Concerts and i spoke with them all! (YEAH ;-)) My Favorite album is "perfect element". They also have an accustic album "12:5" its pretty cool, but before you listen to this you should know all the songs.

Hi there!

EVERGREY- is a must!!!

They certainley aren't DT, but really good music is getting harder to find these days, and this is the best newer band I have heard in a long time! I would suggest starting with the "Recreation Day" album, or "Master Plan". These guys are really talented, and I would doubt you would regret it.
Anyway, good luck with your search, and please pass on any good ones you find!

Happy Holidays!

I highly recommend Into Eternity! They aren't really heavy keyboard users, but they have some really neat vocal harmonies.. it's pretty heavy stuff with some screaming, but they're very technical, and very impressive vocally.

Opeth, for the same reasons as karansaraf. I'd recommend going with Blackwater Park, which I think is their best album, but if you're not a fan of death metal growling, go with Damnation.

OK i got stuck into my mates extensive metal collection and ripped out 3 Opeth albums (Ghost Reveries, Deliverence and Damnation) as well as Children Of Bodom new one.

Thoroughly disappointed in the COB album..... What happened to good old Warheart/follow the reaper style neo-classical death metal?

Everygrey, Pain Of Salvation and a few others are also on the top of my CDs to get list.

With a few exceptions Prog music should have died in the late 70s

Most of my favorites have already been mentioned. Dreamscape, Mindkey, Heaven's Cry and Lemur Voice are definitely worth checking out as well.
