As far as i know Chopin etudes are very popular compositions with this community members (including JR himself). In my opinion, emotional directness and musical beauty of this set of compositions is absolutley unique!
But what is Your favourite one? Are You capable to perform them?My are etudes in c minor (what a coincidence) from both op 10 and 25.
(I present my interpretations of them in show off section;))
I also love op 10 nr 3 for this calm theme...

I love Opus 10, numbers one and three. None of the other ones impress much quite as much as those two, for some reason. I tried learning number one a while ago, but I just can't seem to get it.
I love Opus 10 No3 E, No9 Fmin, and No12 Cmin. And Opus 25 No11 Amin and no 12 Cmin. First i learned Op10 No9, after i tried No 12 and No 3 from Op10. But my favourite is always Op25 No11..I watched a video of Richter, he was playing this one. I really impressed....

I love them all, but I have a weakness for number Op 10 no 1, 3, 4, 5, 8 (listen at the part starting around 0:32 seconds and last only a few seconds.... it makes me crazy :) ) and no 12. In opus 25, my preferences goes to no 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 9 and 11. But if I had to choose one in each set, I'd go with no 4 in the first one and no 9 in the second one. But it changes. Sometimes I prefer another one or hear this note I didn't hear in the previous listen that changes everything. So this is a continuously moving list.
Have you listened to the 3 post-mortem etudes? They don't really do it for me but still, its Chopin!
I have a recording of Boris Berezovsky doing them all which I listen to daily at the job (I love it when coding!) and I also bought the Valentina Lisitsa DVD where she perform them all live. Its jaw dropping...

I like the Revolutionary Etude...because that's the only one I know. :p
I love almost all of Chopin's work though. I also play a prelude by him, as well as 4 different waltzes (well...3 and a half, I never learned the mid section for one of them)...I don't know the numbers offhand though. Great music...he's in my "top 3" for classical music.

I think Op.10 No.3 has to be...especially if anyone has a recording by Richter or Shura Cherkassky...Chopin wrote he thought it to be his single greatest melody that he had ever written for any composition...it's just such a moving and artistic etude (on top of it being really hard!)

Op. 10 No. 4 in C# minor is a favorite of mine. I've played Op. 10 No. 12, and Op. 25 No. 12, and I'm currently working on Op. 10 No. 3.

Post-mortem etudes are not that outstanding..but i know them and i even played etude in f minor with this bizzare rythm (4 notes in left while 3 notes in right hand) a few years ago.
Nice playing man, i like it:wink:

I like most of them, but my favorites are #8, op. 10 and the revolutionary. I can't play most of them, unfortunately.

Yeah haha. I don't like Chopin, I don't know if it's because I never took much time to listen to his stuff.

+1 here. The 4th. in C# minor. I also got the Valentina Lisitsa DVD, awesome playing.
A good question to ask also is: Who is your favorite soloist to play these etudes? I have the ones by György Cziffra, Murray Perahia, and İdil Biret.
I tend to like Perahia's one best. Cziffra's playing is phenomenal, but it's too fast sometimes :D.
