Hello people,
yesterday I had the first rehearseal with my band and sometimes the volumes of some of my setups (I play Yamaha Motif ES) changed...
I mean, I used to adjust the volume of each sound in the setups by playing over some DT songs, in order to balance everything. Me and the guys tried to adjust our volumes in the studio but we were not able to fix it completely so I thought I had to regulate again my internal volumes.
Any idea or suggestion?

Hey dog, I have the same problem with my Motif "classic"6 and fluctuations are moderately dramatic at times (especially thru "in-ear monitors"), So much so, that the band Im currently in thinks Ive been screwing with them. Needless to say, its REALLY F**king annoying! Anyone who could shed some light on this subject would be appreciated.

Program all your patches to be at the appropriate volume ratio with eachother.

I played a song with the big band last week where I was switching a lot between electric piano, hammond, and clav sounds. The patches I was using had MASSIVE volume differences...the EP was way too quiet and the hammond was just overbearing. Solution? Give the EP a little boost, bring the hammond way down. Voila. Just make sure that you save them that way so that its the same when you call it back up at practice next time.

a compressor between your board and the PA/amp helps out too

A compressor would help but depending on the settings it could have a major effect on your sounds which you wouldn't want.

I'd run through the songs with your bands at the next rehearsal, and rather than really concentrating on playing the parts, work out the right volume for each patch and save them at those volumes.

Is there anyone using the Motif ES in live performance?

Regarding the volume settimgs, motifator forum says:

Utility
F1 General
SF4 Other
Tab to the CtrlReset value and change it to HOLD.
Press Store (enter/yes) to retain this value the next time you power up.

This setting will hold the controller values and will not reset them with each voice or performance change, so the end result is usually less volume variation as you switch around.

Any other input?

Hello Michael,
yesterday I tried this trick while playing with my band. I have to say it worked a little bit so I had to adjust some performances directly in our studio.
Do you normally play with your band in the performance mode?
Thanks for the co-operation!

Hay P.K., I play in master mode with presets from both voice and performance mode programmed into it.

I play in a DT cover band and for the moment I play everything from the performance mode. Do you personally reccomend me to play from the master mode? ciao

Hey P.K. Thats entirely up to you. I have to move presets around alot so thats why Im using master mode. If you have all the presets u need back to back in performance mode there isnt really any reason to change. As far as I know, there really isnt anything to be gained in Master Mode except being able to shuffle presets around when "Pain in the ass" singers change song orders around in a set at the last minute. If performance mode is workin for ya Id say to just use that. Im no authority on this and there may very well be additional benefits for master mode but thats what I use it for. Hope this helps

I have read somewhere that the advantage of the master mode is when you step to the next preset. I use a footswitch to scroll thru my performances but when I do it the sound stops for a very little while to have the new sound.
In the master mode there's a trick to avoid this.
Is your sound not stopping when changing presents?
Thanks for your help!

Oh yea???? I use the footswitch to scroll forward too (cuz I need my hands free, same as u Im sure). The time that my sound stops is no different in master mode than it is in voice or performance mode. If there is a trick to make the preset switch SEAMLESS, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE share it!! Thats one of my very few gripes about this board (and my motif)

The reason that the sound cuts off abruptly is that when you change voices, performances or master setups, the instrument must reset its effects processing for the newly selected voice, performance or mix. In order to do this and not have any weird artifacts, it flushes any notes which are currently sounding.

You can avoid this abrupt cutoff by setting up a song or pattern mix with the voices you wish to switch seamlessly between and then simply selecting a new part in the mix (by pressing the appropriately numbered button ([1] - [16]). Any notes being played when the part number is changed will decay naturally rather than being abruptly cut-off. See Avery Burdette's tip from the Clinician's Corner for more information.

One unfortunate limitation of this method is that you cannot use a foot switch to increment through the parts of a mix (but must rather push the appropriate numbered button on the front of the keyboard. Also, don't forget that your Motif ES has (only!) 8 dual insertion effects processors, so if you decide to use this method for seamlessly changing voices, only 8 parts can have dual insertion effects applied to them.
