in the octavarium video that someone posted here from vienna in the 16:00 the part of :sailing of the seize....you can hear the JLB singing but he's not actually singing!you see later that he put the mic in his mouth.and before they start to sing before JR moved to the oasys you can here something like marimba or something like that and he moves but that sound doesn't stop!

DT would be the last band to perform a playback!

Yes, but that would explain the fact they they don't play any mistakes :P

Ah glad to hear it wasn't lipsync. Not that I'd VER believe DT would do lipsync, since it's SO unprofessional and against the guys' principles.. ;)

That's actually not true, because you'll hear a couple of small mistakes here and there. Bigger mistakes are hard to find.

The one that strikes me most is the wrong note in Jordan's first solo on Overture 1928 on LSFNY. I winced at that, but otherwise.....what mistakes?

I think listening to Labrie over the years is proof enough that they don't lip sync. There have been times that his vocal chord problems have been VERY aparent and my hat's off to him that he's been able to work through it and come out healthy again. I think a lot of singers would have given up and switched to singing bass.

I don't think the singing would sound the same if he was lip syncing.

yeah, and, as mentioned in the commentary of LSfNY, labrie messes up the lyrics at one part: "my mind Trips desire" instead of "drips"

also, there's some accidentally petrucci feedback, and other stuff

i think if a band like DT played to a tape, it would just be ludicrous. i mean, the reason pop stars often lip sync (aside from being subpar singers) is that people expect to see an AMAZING stage show with lots of dancing and choreography (thanks to michael jackson who has the best live pop show ever and does NOT lip sync), and a lot of these pop stars aren't fit enough to do all that dancing and still be able to sing.

but the whole POINT of DT for a lot of fans is that they're incredible players. they're not doing anything else except playing their hearts out up there...if they faked it, there would be virtually no point in seeing them live

That's actually not true, because you'll hear a couple of small mistakes here and there.Indeed - for example, on L@tB, the band are playing Hollow Years, and JP loses his place and thinks they're in a shred song! He starts shredding up the solo before realizing what song they're in and calming down for the chorus.

Awake, this version of Hollow Years was planned that way, because I've seen this version live a couple of times before the Budokan show was recorded.
The thing with LaBrie is correct, his singing was because of a sickness he had not very good for many years. But since almost two years, I am so enthused by his live singing.

Here's another example, taken from Jeroen Hendrix' interview with Jordan for the fanclub (you can find it at www.jordanrudess.com/thwheel )

JH: What has been your biggest mistake on stage?
JR: Coming in with a new section by mistake in the middle of John Petrucci's wailing guitar solo during Lines in the Sand

Wasn't it last year that DT was supposed to go on some TV show and they cancelled a few days before because the show (and I'm paraphrasing here) wanted them to perform in a way which went against their principles?

They probably wanted them to just lipsync it. A lot of TV shows do that cause they don't have the logistics to setup a live band for just one song.

Think I remember something about them wanting them to drastically shorten a song.

Well putting DT on a TV show would just take the entire show for one song, wouldn't it? :P
