Hi,

I was wondering if anyone can tell me what this is called (explanation below):

It's from "The Piano" soundtrack if anyone wonders, however I've seen it occur a lot of places.

If you see the lower stave there are quarter notes sort of "on top of" the bunch of 16ths, where the pauses are...

Anyone know a term for this, if any? Reason I'm asking is so I can find out how to make it work in Finale (by looking through the help files apparently). If anyone knows that too, that would be even better. :P

Thanks in advance for whatever pops up.

It looks like the left hand part is actually 2 parts. One being the 4th note and the other the 16th notes. If you want it to look alright you need to write the 2 parts in different layers (in Finale you have 4 different layers that you use on each staff) . The name you would use for having multiple parts on a staff is polyphonic notation..

I hope this helps you.
