Hi,
Is the cello in song Vacant real or is it a patch?? :?: :?:
In my opinion it sounds too real to be a patch in JR's synth.
Suggestions would be accepted!

it is a cello. they got a professional cellist to play those parts. they mention his name in the liner notes, and if you watch the bonus material videos (you get to access them online if you buy the CD), you can watch him play! definitely not a JR patch
someone said that on the euro tour, petrucci has been covering the cello parts with volume swells and (i'm guessing here) an e-bow.

Eugene Friesen, from the Paul Winter Consort if I'm not wrong...

That's correct, Marco! :)
An awesome cellist!
By the way, Arkaitz:
If you have the original Train of Thought CD, watch the two videos!
If you don't have the original CD, buy it or send 1.000.000U.S.$ directly to Dream Theater...

That's right Jeff. Petrucci did the Cello thing! BTW, I think Kurzweil could imitate such sound :P :D !

Hi Majesty,
I have the original one!!!!! 8)
The thing is that I have never heard of such a video!!!
I'll have a look this weekend even though my internet communication speed isn't any good! We haven't got DSL connection yet in my town.
You know, we live as people lived a hundred of years back!
Thanks a lot!! :D

It's Jay Beckenstein (Spyro Gyra), "the 6th member of Dream Theater" (as Mike said :) )

We also don't have DSL in our town!
There's also a low speed connection link to a low quality video. I just don't know if the videos are still available, because there used to be a link on the dt.net site where you now find a link to order those freaky presale 500$ packages :D

Holy crap, really? I didnt know thats where that guy was from!
One (BIG) step closer of my dream of DT doing an album of Oregon-style music. Just picture, Jordan dumps the 2600 for the Steinway, John goes for nylon and 12 string acoustic, oh man would that kick ass!
I knew there was a reason why Vacant is one of my favorite tracks from the new album!

Jordan has played with The Paul Winter Consort as well. That's where he met Theresa.
P.S.- I'm really getting bored, because I'm on a music break from a Bach Prelude, and dug through old posts.

Yeah, I would love a full album of that sort of stuff. I wouldn't want more than one though, because I still prefer the prog metal.

In the JR DT keyboard anthology, it denotes that the keyboards play a cello patch with the piano, however I have seen petrucci doing the swells and saw the cellist on the DVD. I'm confused. Why would the keyboard anthology tell the keyboards to play the cello parts?

I guess so if you wanted to learn the cello part on piano you could.

The piano sound is layered with a pad.

The pad actually only plays for about the first two bars or so and then fades out.

True, but there's also a pad layered with the piano, it's possible to hear it.
