Hello, I notice in a lot of recordings, there is this rising "swoosh" sound right before an organ begins playing. Does anyone know how/why this happens on recordings that I thought were keyboard organs... shouldn't that only happen in pipe organs?

I don't really know what you mean, but I bet that this effect is not there accidently. ;)

Examples i can think of on the top of my head:
DT: Trial of Tears, during the last chorus... a swoosh leads into an audible organ sound.
DT: Voices, in the intro when organ mimics original bass line

I believe that it's just a glissando, but with several fingers at seperate points, possibly with a bit of use from a volume pedal.

the way I learned how to do it is to do a glissando with your palm. Basically, set your fingers for the chord (or whatever you will be playing) with your right hand, and stick your palm down on the bottom of the keyboard (open with your hand on as many keys as possible) and pull it up to where your right hand is. It works really well if the vibrato is on. It basically gives a great growl (especially if the lower drawbars are all the way out).
On a B3, it sounds awesome. I recorded on a B3 last month and it really brought the organ parts to life. I'll try to get a version of the song up tonite for you to hear

Yup, it's all palm glissandi on a hammond, or decent hammond simulator. It's one of the most effective hammond techniques (IMO), once I mastered using it tastefully, my organning improved 100%.
Word of warning...do not try palm glissandi on a weighted keyboard!!!! It will hurt like hell!!!!!

Heh, I learned that a few weeks back trying to replicate my part on my weighted controller... I eventually figured out if I rub my left hand on my shirt right beforehand (to remove any sweat) and aim the fingers on my left hand towards my right hand and not press down too hard, it's really easy to pull it off... Just takes a bit of practice.
Heh, at first I thought of covering my keys with Pam spray to make my hand slide easier.... But then I figured that would be a little messy. :D

It's indeed a glissando with the palm of your hand. Not difficult, only timing is critical.
just listen to SB for example. A lot of Hammond effects.
