If any of you guys wants to know if you REALLY have absolute pitch, Here is a test ONLINE that you can go take conducted by the University of California.
I have been told by my music teachers, other musicians, etc. that I have it for years but never had a FORMAL test (besides them singin or playin a note and me naming it in under 3 seconds). Well I have it. How much good it actually does me is subject for debate however its cool to feel "SPECIAL". Go take the test, its REALLY INTENSE but fun (you have to name each note in under 3 seconds). Let me know how ya's make out and what ya thought.

Good job bro! We're in the top of our CLASS!
I got a AP of 1.00 /pure tone= 35.25/piano tone 35.75
I thought you might like that site. Pass it forward!
You are absolutely right. It IS most definately a curse and a blessing.
Well, that site should settle all the perfect pitch bickering back and forth with these guys if they take the time to go visit it. Did you explore all the other info about perfect pitch? Congratulations!

Yea it makes my head SPLIT when someone is singing flat. Im like "OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!MAKE IT STOP!!!!!!!MAKE IT STOP!!!!!!!!!!!!"LOL

I'll have to try that one sometime. I took one I found a month ago or so, which played 3 sets of 12 tones, with a few seconds between each. It's interesting that this one supposedly only gives you three seconds to guess each one. That may determine who has actual perfect pitch, and who has pitch memory. I have good pitch memory, but occasionally it takes me more than 3 seconds to name a tone.

DOES JORDAN HAVE PERFECT PITCH??????

Yes.

Congratulations! You have Perfect Pitch.

Age: 20

AP rank: 1.00

Pure tone score: 33.50

Piano tone score: 36

When I pressed the wrong note, I knew I was wrong. I was just a little too slow to press the right key. The problem is that when I hear the note go up, I instinctively go up the keyboard. I have a similar test at home, except that it has 5 or 6 octaves, and you have to press the correct octave to get the answer correct. It took me 103 guesses to name 100 notes, and the 3 mistakes were the correct note, they were just the wrong octave. If I did it again, I could get a prefect score, but I don't care. I'm surprised that I was able to name them that quickly. I thought I'd gotten worse over the last year or two. I'm happy with my result.

LOL!!! YA Gaz, we are FREAKS! I really think you could do better though if you apply yourself.

LITHO, yea...in regards to the 3 sec. guess time thing you mentioned, perfect pitch is basically supposed to be immediate note recognization. It makes sense though what you say about pitch memory (in regards to the note identification taking a bit longer) cuz you probably have to reference the pitch internally or something (a longer process)
My P.O.S. mouse screwed me over a couple of times too.
Im really happy to share the goodness with ya'all.

WOW!!!!!!!!!! i cant believe that im meeting other perfect pitch people. this is cool. i only know like one other person in the WORLD that has it, but were not on the same level. IM NOT BRAGGING, thats just how it is. and it takes him maybe less than a minute to get a note, or find it. for me, its less than 3 seconds almost every time. and i also love getting tested in school, becuase i hang out with other musical kids, and alot of times, we go to a piano, and they test me. its alot of fun watching their faces go blank and their mouths drooping. its funny. their like, "MIKE WHAT THE HELL?!?!? HOW CAN YOU DO THAT?!!?!?" im just like, "i was born with it." i think perfect pitch has helped me through many musical issues. i discovered it when i was in 5th grade. back then it would take me over a minute to pick out a note. now, as its developed ALOT over the years, with people constantly testing my ability, its a piece of cake for me. i dont mean to brag, im just telling my story.

for all the other people with perfect pitch, wahts YOUR story? how did you discover it? and how have you developed over the years?

Michael Troy
08-28-2005, 09:20 PM
Hey dt, welcome to the perfect pitch brotherhood! I know you are not braggin...you are just stating the facts. I understand totally. Its the same for me too. I guess it does give us braggin rights though.I dont remember how I discovered it, it was "JUST THERE" and as far as developing it, I dont know either cuz i never had formal "ear training".

dt67789
08-28-2005, 09:37 PM
i had alot of ear training growing up which really developed the perfect pitch, but i really believe that i was born with it, and the ear training helped to bring the perfect pitch out early in my life. thats what i think. WOW, ive never talked about this to anyone before. its cool. too bad its rare, but then again, its a good thing, becuase ur SPECIAL. but people that dont have it, dont feel bad (ur thinking, "yeah easy for u to say") because YOU LOVE THE BEST BAND IN THE WORLD!!!! there are so many people out there that listen to crap (aka green day, taking back sunday, and most rap) and they cant listen to prog becuase THEY cant appreciate it, and they cant appreciate it because they dont UNDERSTAND it. even if you dont have perfect pitch, you still listen to one of the most talented bands in the world, and can totally understand it.

another thing on the subject, its really fun and challenging to try to figure out all the guitar riffs and keyboard solos by ear. idk if any of you do it, michael troy, maybe you would. idk. thats all

EDIT: i wish that jordan would share HIS experiences on his perfect pitch with us. thatd be cool.

I don't have perfect pitch but I have strong relative pitch so I do actually do a lot of transcribing without an instrument, where I'll hear a melody/riff/solo and pick up on patterns, so as long as I can figure out the beginning note, I know what the rest of the snippet is doing from there.

Honestly, I'm glad that I don't have "true" perfect pitch, because of the aforementioned problems with slight tuning problems. I can tell a difference in pitch at about 3 cents (if I'm changing it on my synth), but if something is less than 20 cents sharp or flat it usually won't bother me because I won't realize that it's not at the "true" pitch unless I have something to reference it with.

Michael Troy
08-28-2005, 10:19 PM
Yea , just because someone has perfect pitch does not mean they are gonna be great though. There are tons of famous(and non-famous) musicians that have excellent relative pitch and just totally ROCK. Here's another thing too, having perfect pitch doesnt neccessarily mean all synth solos and guitar solos are a breeze to figure out. Trust me, I know. There is still blindingly fast licks that dont always go in exact diatonic order and at least for me, the recordings of songs are so "wet" that it is REALLY hard to decode some passages.

hahah, no problem. For that bit in never enough, i found a terrible guitar tab of it, and just fixed it up until i found the right notes.
Funny you mention the unison in metropolis pt.1, im currently getting that up to speed so i can play it with a guitarist at my school who knows the whole song. (got the transcription from the anthology book).

But yeah i just love transcribing stuff. Im working on the MIDIs from the new album at the moment, all the ones i have done sofar are under ''other peoples midis'' here at blob's website:

Congratulations- you have perfect pitch.

Piano tone score: 36

What is interesting about this, is something that I'm sure relates to others. Depending on your state of mind, you could score differently at this test. Your ear to brain function does not always work consistently through the day or even from day to day. I always have perfect pictch but some days it is better then others!

i hear you jordan. on most days, its very on. some days when im just really tired, im a little flat on each note. but other than that, its always on.

HEY!!!! YOU AND ME GOT THE SAME SCORES!!!!!!!!!!! (on ur second time). wow. the same score as JR. how AWESOME is that?!?!?!?

this question is also for jordan:

jordan, how did YOU find your perfect pitch? id really like to know that

thats all

How depressing :(

No problem. I dont have the equipment here to proffesionally transcribe anything - I have my steaming pile of a casio behind me and my guitars to the left of me, i have my ears on either side of my head and i use them to transcribe everything i hear into a cool little guitar tab editor called 'tabit'.
If i encounter a difficult section i use a plug-in for winamp called 'Pacemaker' that slows it right down.

Most others i know have top of the range controllers and notation programs, good sequencers and mixers and awesome soundcards etc... But i dont have the money or resources for those kinds of things.

Don't worry. I'm using cheap ol' Noteworthy Composer through general midi, so you're not alone! I do use VSC, but that's basically just GM with some more patch banks. And thanks for promoting my site ;)

It's not bad. Its certainly easier than the first test, and a good way to practice and learn theory too! I still can't figure the "Note location - chromatic" stuff. Guess I'll have to ask my good old friend Google about te and ti!

I am drilling one called EAR TEST but it only lets ya identify 5 notes at once. I mean identify one of 5 possible notes not 5 notes at once.

I do better on this one. Strangely enough, it's not because I have more time to answer them, I actually answer them a lot faster, and I haven't gotten any wrong yet. I think it's because the answers are clumped together more and aren't on a keyboard. Since I don't play keyboard, I'm slower at finding the notes when they are on keys.

How does it feel to have perfect pitch?

Because I started David Lucas Burge's perfect pitch-course a month ago, but I haven't got to the point where I can feel something superior and magnificent like Burge says. I've noticed some difference like when tuning my guitar, some pitches like E and A are more clearer and easier to tune.

Has anyone else graduated this course?

Michael Troy

Well....its like this, some days u feel special but more times than not I hear everything that is wrong with the sound and not enough of what is right thus making music very taxing and unenjoyable at times especially my own and the more I play, the worse it gets. Perfect pitch has a tendancy to make me mental.
