I am not sure if this is the right name of it, but I will try to explain what I mean:

I play one or more tones with a patch or a setup. Then I have to switch the patch/setup very quick. What is rather annoying with my Roland XP-30 is that as soon as I switch the patch, the tones are "turned off". It would be much better if I can play a tone, switch the patch and the same tone is still there until I release the key.
Which synths have this function? I could work with the Performance Mode where this is possible, but then again, the tones would not have the best quality.

Does it always depend on the price of the synth, or does it also depend on the brand?

The Kurzweil does it - as you said, the sounds are changed when you release the key. But I think some settings like volume are changed immediately, so when you hold a key and switch it could happen that your sound gets louder and blows you away... not that I've made this experience...

But I don't know if it depends on the brand - I also switch my Korg N1 when changing sounds at the Kurzweil, I think these tones are also kept until releasing the key... I have to take a closer look at it...

In the old forum there was a topic similar to this one, discussing synth/keyboards with the "patch hold" feature.

The Tritons can do this when set up in sequencer mode. See the Seamless Patch Change howto in Gear Tutorials for more info.

E-MU's do it, although if you have the effects set up as a patch-by-patch basis (they can be either global or per-preset... or indeed off, as I use (or rather don't use) them) then when you change patch the effects sometimes change to those of the new patch, which can be a bit disconcerting! On the whole though, I use that feature a lot on my E-MU's.

Don't know if xp-30 has a sequencer, if yes, simply change the MIDI channels instead of switching sounds, that should do it. The trick is to put each sound on one MIDI channel. For the rest, effects play their role, too. On a Kurzweil, the sound changes won't be smooth if you change to sounds with COMPLETELY different and complex effects or when you change to KB3 mode (back to VAST is quicker tough).

The XP-30 has no sequencer. If the sound holds but the setup changes, also on the current tone, it is also not that cool, is it? Didn't know that even the Kurzweils aren't perfect with that... :?

No synth is perfect with that, unless you use the same effect on every sound, then the Kurzweil will be perfect (except when getting from VAST to KB3 because the Kurz has to reserve the polyphony first.

The Ion can do it perfectly, if you're into VAs.
