I was picked up from a summer music camp in Brevard, North Carolina by my band and my dad, and we drove down to Atlanta. The first six bands were Bobaflex, Dry Kill Logic, Nevermore, Life of Agony, The Dillinger Escape Plan, and Fear Factory. We didn't actually get to the show until Nevermore started playing, so I don't know how the first two were. Nevermore was pretty cool, lots of shredding and such. Life of Agony wasn't terribly interesting.
DEP, though the sound wasn't mixed very well, were incredibly energetic. Early on, the singer threw a water bottle out into the crowd and it hit some guy. They were jumping all over the stage, on top of cabinets, even on the kick drum. At one point the main guitarist kicked the singer in the leg, and later the singer broke a mic stand and threw it at the guitarist. Very enjoyable to watch, even though you couldn't hear any of the leads.
Fear Factory wasn't intriguing.
Dream Theater's show was absolutely incredible. The intro tape was the main theme from "A Clockwork Orange." The setlist was (in not exactly the right order):
The Root of All Evil
The Glass Prison
Panic Attack
Fatal Tragedy
Under a Glass Moon
Endless Sacrifice
Lie
Just Let Me Breathe
As I Am
Encore: Pull Me Under/Metropolis Pt. 1 Medley
Some highlights: extended JR solo in JLMB, where he played the Continuum while harmonizing himself on the Oasys, JR playing Mary had a Little Lamb in place of the usual keyboard break in ES, MP playing with a stuffed animal in his teeth, JLB hitting every single note (including the high ones during the UAGM chorus), JM doing lots of crazy tapping, JP playing over the fretboard on PMU, a speed-up during the 2nd verse of PMU to about double the tempo, then dropping it back during the prechorus. It was definitely the best concert I have ever been to.
After the show, we got to go the backstage meet and greet with DT, which was absolutely incredible. We got pictures with the band, and I had a nice conversation with JR about keyboards and music, which was really inspiring. He even signed my music for Over the Edge. MP's kids were running around the whole time, and this one guy got his cymbal signed by MP and his son Max.
After the meet and greet, we got to go on the floor for the last half of Megadeth's show, which was pretty good. There was a lot of pyro and the drummer had this cymbal rack suspended above him, which was cool. I didn't realize they were so skilled, but Dave Mustaine and the guy who replaced Marty Friedman (Glenn something) played some really nice solos.
Overall, it was a really great show, and DT are an ultra cool group of guys in person. I'll try to have some pictures up soon.
