Has anybody here used logic express?

The reason I'm asking is because I'm planning on getting a 15" powerbook and wasn't sure whether or not to have logic express pre-installed or not bother.

If you didn't like Logic Express, what program(s) would you recommend for mac?

Hi!
I'm using Logic Pro 7 for only a few days and I think it's one of the best all around. It does really great soundings and have great virtual instruments. I think it's the best for your laptop as it is perfectly made for Mac OS X (unlike Cubase SX 3).
The only 3 negative remarks I have are :
- It has a real learning curve (but after that it's great, you just have to learn its 'logic').
- It is not VST compatible but you can buy a VST to AU (AudioUnits) software here : http://www.fxpansion.com/product-auadapter-main.php .
- It is (of course) not Cubase SX compatible and if you have other friends with Cubase to exchange with, it can be a problem.
You can get a trial here :
http://www.apple.com/logicexpress/trial/
Hope that helps.

thanks for the response... just to clarify, I'm looking at Logic Express & not Pro... I might upgrade to Pro later on if I decide to go with it...

Um, I'm a bit new to this stuff, so what does it mean that it's not VST compatible & how does that translate to the real world (ie what's VST and how does not being compatible limit me)

Finally, out of curiosity, do you use apple's keyboard or did you already have your own?

VST stands for Virtual Studio Technology (or something very similar). It's basically a standard of plugins (possibly similar to compressors, limiters, and the like), that allow you to play instruments via MIDI.

For example, at my home Tracktion rig (I got the entire program for free *glee*), i'm currently using Piano, Bass, Organ and Synth VSTs. They're software synthesisers, basically.

I've been using Logic for the past two years, and i've found that the learning curve can be steep, but that's what the manual's for.

Logic not being VST-compatible just means that you can't take a VST 'out of the box' as it were, install it, and expect it to run - as MindCrime said, you need to convert it to an Audio Unit first - Logic's take on VST.

Hope that helps ;)
