Kurzweil At Live 8 Concert
Press Release 7/10/05
Dave Weiser
In what was considered by most critics to be the classic-rock reunion of the decade, Pink Floyd re-united, performing this past weekend at the London stage for Live 8, the multi-stage, multi-national rock concert spectacle organized by Bob Geldof to raise awareness about African poverty. The concert was shown by over 140 television stations worldwide and reached upwards of 2-3 billion viewers.
Floyd keyboardists Jon Carin and Richard Wright insisted on an all-Kurzweil keyboard rig (with the exception of Richard's Hammond organ) for the show. Four K2600s, a K2661 and a KSP8 were used to bring classic sounds from the albums "Dark Side of the Moon", "Wish You Were Here" and "The Wall" to life with precision and authenticity.
The Wurlitzers from Kurzweil's "Vintage EPs" ROM were among the more prominently featured sounds.

Also, highlighting the concert at the stage in Berlin was Brian Wilson's "SMiLE" tour. Musical director and keyboardist, Darian Sahanaja relied on several K2600s and PC2s to recreate the textures from the long anticipated and critically acclaimed album, "SMiLE". Listen for the detuned upright piano sound - Darian and Brian had been so impressed with the Kurzweil piano that they actually replaced the real upright on the album with the Kurzweil sound (custom programmed by Kurzweil R&D). The "SMiLE" tour is currently on tour in Europe, and will be starting its U.S. tour in August.

It is great to see support from the artists who influence the world around us, even with their very presence. Most all of the performances I saw were absolutely amazing -- and it sure is nice to see Pink Floyd playing together again
