I'm planning to buy a Kurzweil K2600X (but I'm still not to sure). I'm a pianist wanting to play Progressive Metal. I like soloing with the keyboard. Examples of the Lead Voices I like are:

- Jens Johansson in the albums "Fission" and "Heavy Machinery".
- Michael Pinnella (Symphony X) in, i.e., "Into The Drangon's Den" (2:50), "Orion The Hunter" (4:00), "A Fools Paradise" (3: 18) and "Evolution (The Grand Design)" (3:18).
- Kevin Moore (when in Dream Theater) in, i.e., "Take The Time" (0:44 and 5:18), "Metropolis Part I" (1:30) and "Under a Glass Moon" (5:35).

Also recently I hear the demo of the Triton Extreme by Jordan called "RA", and I really liked the lead sound (0:36, 1:27 and 3:11) (more than the lead sound on the Kurzweil version in the Album of Jordan).

My question is:
- It's possible to make or have this lead voices in the Kurzweil?

Thanks a lot!

It is overly possible to have those leads and much more complex and deep ones on the Kurzweil. There is very little other than pure analogue tones that you can't get on a Kurz, provided you spend enough time programing. However, it's a very complex piece of equipment. The learning curve is very slow and complex, bu the results are very rewarding. It is basically the beast.

BUT. The triton is much easier and user friendly and it can get extremely powerfull sounds as well. Maby it isn't as deep as the kurz, but it kicks major ass and it's synth tones are incredible. Actually I prefer it to the Kurz. Don't really know why. Just a matter of taste I suppose.

Another board that's worth looking into, as you will find out by reading the forum, is the Yamaha Motif. Very nice board as well.

They are all excellent options that will get you those lead tones and much, much more, provided you are willing to take the time needed to learn how to use them properly.

Cheers!

I will second Lurion's comments. On the Kurz, if you can hear it or imagine it, you can create it. However, expect to take quite some time learning how to do so if you're aren't already advanced in synthesis. The Tritons and Fantoms support instant gratification, but aren't all that deep. The 2600, and the Motif less so aren't as initially rewarding, but have many more sonic options.

Here you can find sound samples of programs i've published on ProgSounds (http://www.progsounds.com) for Kurzweil K2*00 synthesizers. There are a lots of leads too, including Jens-like and Pinella/Moore sawish leads.

Mind that only Solo Lead uses KDFX :)
