I never get tired of listening to this song. I especially like the way Petrucci mixes the Steve Hackett accousting guitar sound with jamming lead guitar. I've been waiting to hear that mix for a VERY long time. I don't think it's ever been done before. That's certainly something I try to do in my own compositions. I the orchesta at the end and the outro it's self it just BEAUTIFUL...

I love the song, am not sure of it being my favorite I mean, I have to wait a while for the whole octavarium euphoria to stop. I really like the way that the song handles two main moods, For those of us that write songs, we certainly know that playing with moods the way DT did in octavarium is really hard, thats just something kind of like extra that made me like the song even more.

JR`s contributions to the song made me like it even more. I congratulate JR and the rest of the guys for such an intersting song/album. I dont care for people that dislike this album and even have the guts to bash it in public. I LOVE every single note on this cd.

I agree. There are definitely elements of old Genesis, Steve Hackett solo albums and Marillion. Especially James' little rap at the end. Very much like Forgotten Sons from Marillion. The REAL Marrillion with Fish. I like the way the guitar and keyboard parts are updated. Totally jamming guitar and keyboard leads. In the old days of prog is was typically the keyboard that did most of the soloing. There are definitely some hints of Chris Squire of Yes in the bass parts as well.

IMHO Octavarium is the best song DT has ever made

I also think that this song is very progressive. Merijn, what's prog for you?

Nothing beats The Dance of Eternity so far, in my opinion. Well I dunno, I have a new favorite DT song every week.

Octa is good anyways.

Agreed. 2 things I notice in listening to this song again and again:

1. Every time I hear a small detail, be it a texture or synth riff or something that my ears did not pick up in the previous listening. That is a really cool thing indeed !

2. Even though the song is like 28 ? minutes long, the time passes very very quickly. To me that's the mark of a really good song. To be that long and seem to be over too quickly. Amazing !

Finally, I can't get enough of that awesome cool moog riff. I could just play it over and over again !

Couldn´t agree more. The only other 20+ minute track that comes to my mind spontanously that really flies by that fast is Transatlantic´s Stranger In Your Soul.

I was a bit sceptic when I first heard Octavarium, but now I´m really diggin´ it!

I'm not sure that anyone can legitimately say that they never get tired of listening to a piece of music that's only been released for a few weeks. Less than thirty days and you're not bored with it yet? Wow. A chap I know says that he's never gotten tired of listening to Echoes by Pink Floyd, and he's been listening to that song for thirty-five years.

Octavarium is a great song, but I personally think Home is DT's best song.

i really like the soundtrack of cowboy bebop, especially on sessions 'jupiterjazz' and 'the real folk blues'.

The music is the best thinkg about the show, besides Ed's lines. Yoko Kano is a wizard with music.

It recently became my fav DT song. I can't believe it topped ACOS! Right now it's my favorite song by anyone ever, after a few listens and understanding the lyrics you realize how amazing it is. Congratulations for an amazing performance Jordan!

So what's the first 2.45?

Is that Jordan with the continuum and the V-synth patch, or Petrucci with some new guitar sounds? Also is that pedal steel / steve howesque stuff that follows a pedal steel actually played by Jordan? Props to him if so.

The first part is the continuum, followed by JR on the lap steel guitar, with the distortion lap steel guitar from 3:50 to 4:25, I think.
