I was wondering how you can put patches on to a memory card for a synth. from the computer? Do you need some kind of adapter or special reader for the card, or can you just send it all through midi?

Usualy there are special memory cards for a synth if the synth has a card slot. Or do you want to use memory cards like a sony memory stick? Then the only way would be to save the data on your PC and then use a adapter (USB or so) for the memory card you want to use.
To transfer from synth to PC: connect your synth and PC with MIDI-cable, then use a program like MIDI-OX to receive incoming data, then make a midi dump on your synth. The data will be transferred to your pc, you can save it as a SysEx-file and then copy it on your memory card. That's the basical way I guess...

With my XV I do a SYSEX dump of patches to the board. These patches get written to the internal bank. From there using the keyboard's utilities I copy the internal bank to my SM memory card. I can assign 8 banks to my Memory Card Presets and also dump any one to internal.
I have a card reader for my PC and I'm also able to copy banks to my card through the PC provided they're in the proper format.
Other boards will have slight differences.
