That was only one guitar riff, and sorry, I don't consider orchestras "true" musicians. I mean, if they're so good, why does it take hundreds of them to sound decent? :P
That wasn't one guitar riff. Freddy wrote the whole song. BoRhap, Ogre Battle, March Of The Black Queen, Stone Cold Crazy, Great King Rat... all songs written and brought into the studio with the different parts hummed out to the rest of the band. Freddy saw compositions like a picture and he never let anyone see them until they were basically done.
As for the classical musos not being true musos... according to the very definition of musician they are musos period. That's why the main Star Wars theme is more crisp and tight sounding on the prequels. The interaction of musos caused a more stacatto approach to cornet and trumpet sections than had been done in the 70s with that group of musos. They both played accented 16th notes but one group accented them a bit more. Both played the music written on the page, and both passed by John Williams with total acceptance.
Ever seen Trans-Siberian Orchestra live? Two touring companies at the same time. East and West. Both playing the same songs, both playing the same arrangements. The two bands couldn't sound more different.
With people like Al Pitrelli, Jane Mangini, Mark Wood, Alex Skolnik, and Bob Kinkel, I hardly think there is any room to accuse them of not being true musicians.
