I can't help but noticing that LaBrie only writes about 1 song per album, and everyone else writes the rest. I don't mean to say he's a bad singer or anything, but it is a little disappointing to hear...

What to hear????

His voice, or that he doesn't write that much???
Sounds a little strange to me.

Stainlessly,

That he doesn't write much. I mean, his own lyrics are as good as everyone elses, so I don't get why.

No, it's disappointing to hear that LaBrie doesn't write too many songs' lyrics. ;-)

I dunno. Personally i quite like it that he doesn't, because then the other band members do and often they write the lyrics reflecting themselves (Voices, 6:00, others i can't remember) and then the interplay between the vocals and instuments is then quite interesting, cos what the instruments do can play of the lyrics and vice versa. But i do agree i would like to see more LaBrie lyrics.

He didn't write any lyrics for DT before Falling Into Infinity anyway, but I know from an interview that every member of the band is actually invited to write lyrics for a song. But they have a deal that the lyrics someone comes up with must be finished.
For example, John Myung wrote something like a "poem" for Learning to Live, but these weren't the finished lyrics and other band members had to finish them. They don't want that anymore, that's also why we haven't had any Myung lyrics in the past albums.

Before someone comes up asking why Jordan doesn't write any lyrics, let me tell you that we have had this discussion before - if I remember right, his excuse was that he's got so much other stuff to do...

For the first time -as long as I am wandering around over here- I have to agree with Mr. Germania, Herr Nitsche... :D

But then you seem to have a bad capacity for remembering! But that's OK, P@, we all know your age is a multiple count of mine...

I don't know, does he not work with the other band members at least on the lyrics?

Rosie,
for the last two albums certainly, he's been in on the writing sessions. I believe he was also hanging around during the making of SFaM. Prior to that time, the music was written and presented to him, although IIRC, before FII, they didn't give him a vocal melody to work from, that was his gig.

I suspect that he doesn't write more DT lyrics for the same reason JM doesn't: he's clearly interested, and clearly capable, but there seems to be something - or someone standing in the way...

JLB writes some of the best stuff.

Did he do all the melodies himself? At least there's some room for feeling then.

Though to be honest, a friend who loves Dream THeater pointed out that James annoyed him sometimes because he said "He thinks he's much better than he really is". I kinda have to agree sometimes, especially when he tries to do "Heavy Metal" style "Yeahs".

I think if he wrote his own lyrics most of the time, he'd be a much more expressive singer, and worked through his own natural voice.

Falling Into Infinity was great, his singing was amazing on that because we worked with his own natural tones. I kind of feel Train Of Thought had him thinking he was heavier than he was.

I hope Octavarium has FiI style LaBrie on it.

Funnily enough, I think he sings heavier on FII than he does on ToT, and I prefer it when he sings like this. And I love the "Yeahs"!
