As many of you know I play keyboards in a band called Mixed Up. We play A LOT of weddings and to start the evening we play an instrumental set of about 30 minutes.
So last weekend we played a wedding and during the instrumental set our guitarist had some technical problems. So to give him some time I decided to play a little "Spirit carries on" on a nice Piano/String sound.

As I played this I suddenly see 2 people in the front of the audience lift their heads and go completely crazy. I thought...mmmm, I'm not the only Dream Theater fan around here.

So after the instrumental set they come to me and say. Wow, so cool that you were playing The spirit carries on. Please play us some more DT tonight.

I promised to throw in some teasers of DT songs that night, so I did.

Always cool when people notice DT songs.

Yeah, sometimes my band throws in snippets of video game tunes (mario, zelda, etc.) and it's always a good feeling when the audience goes "holy shit, I know this!"

Yeah, you never know when and where are you going to find a DT fan. I´ve met DT fans at the church! Incredible...

Heh, it's funny how many different unusual places there are where you can find DT fans.

It's more that its surprising that you actually encounter DT fans in 'daily life'. I mean fekk, they're hard to find and you don't exactly find them when you go out drinking in the local pubs. Maybe if there's a powermetal-pub or such a few might be in there.

It also seems to differ from city to city. I heard in the south of the Netherlands is a big cluster of progressive metal fans, while in other parts of that country there are not many at all.

That's a great story. Ya know, it could have been any group you covered, and just the idea that a whole bunch of people recognized what you were playing and gave a nice response is a really good feeling. That's happened to me at gigs with different bands covered, although back in the 90's people used to go NUTS when the hard rock bands I gigged with played "Pull Me Under". Let the headbanging begin !!!

That's funny, in fact, I recently saw a taekwon-do trainer of mine walking around in a DT shirt. I knew him since ~4 years but this was the first time I found out about him listening to great music ;) . Of course we had a nice chat about all things dt. He's fan since the first album, owns all cds and had already visited 7 shows.
Real oldschool you could say. = )

Hehehe I played Space-Dye Vest with my bassist as the intro to one of my band gigs and much to our surprise, we had a crowd of people screaming 'OH MY GOD DREAM THEATER!!!! Dream theater, dream theater! YEAAAAH play dance of eternity!' while we played SDV! It was abit of a surprise... but a very nice surprise

Here @ Dominican Rep. we did a "Dream Theater Tribute" concert. We (the musicians) were expecting 305 persons, and the place was so crawled up, inside that auditorium where about 500 people! I didnt believed that...

Yeah I met a DT fan on a school trip to France. I was walking around at a chateau and I see a guy with long black hair mustache and goatee with a long black leather jacket and a DT shirt on under it. I could only see the R TH but I new it was DT. We talked a little but only knew a little english. I had to run off quickly since I was late to get back with my school. Its pretty cool though. I also met a DT fan on a debate team trip to Washington DC.

I went to the MGM Grand theme park in Orlando, FL while on the Academic Team state trip, and I was walking around wearing my SFAM shirt. One of the park workers came up to me and we started talking about DT. The same day, 2 girls walked past and said, "Hey, Dream Theater!" They kinda caught me off guard so all I had time to do was throw up the horns (I was with some of my team mates and we were walking pretty fast).
