View Full Version : The Bert Thread

Man, I don't think people appreciate Bert enough. He makes a wonderfully funny topic reminiscant of a rambling on from Strong Bad's email and it's locked, for example. I dunno, I found it pretty funny, I don't think it should have been locked.

I think we need a thread to tell Bert how awesome he is to make up for it! Man, is he awesome. He's like, all cool and lighthearted and "yeah" and stuff instead of all "Look at me I am all techie and stuff" like some people would be. Most people that are well known in the biz wouldn't just go and act a bit mad, they'd be a bit more reserved and out of reach. That's what's so cool about Jordan and Bert, they're not afraid to give wacky comments every so often.

That makes him cool in my book, so let's discuss Bert!

Wow - I didn't realize that you were a moderator here now.

There is a rule that generally applies to all posts - they *should* either contribute or add towards discussion about stuff. In this case, his didn't. I don't care who you are, it's just another post that would take up space and might need to be cleaned up later.
This one is better, because at least it has a purpose of praising Bert.
My contribution: YAY BERT!!!

That same thing being said, even though YOU don't think it needed to be locked, it did. I don't care if someone posts, that's fine - but make sure you're following guidelines. It's that simple ;)

Hell, if JR posted something about absolutely nothing, I'd probably lock that one too and most people including him know I'd do it too :p

Oh and this little comment: "Man, I don't think people appreciate Bert enough"
Direct it at me all you want. I know because I'm the one who closed the thread. I don't care who you are or who doesn't "follow the rules" - that's what they're there for. If it were Bert or anyone else, it would have been treated exactly the same.

Sheesh people.

Awwwwwwww... how nice. Thank you, Rosie! My heart is warmed by all the lovely things you said in your post.

That being said, I think it's very sad that this topic degenerated within three replies into Pat and Frank yelling about the fact that they're old. :P

Perhaps now I should start a thread called "The Useless Thread" filled with things such as "This thread is useless," and "Purple Robot Fish." This, of course, begs the question: Am I unbannable? ::evil grin:: I'm sure that given the right mix of horrible posts, I can legitimately be banned, but simply for starting useless threads? I know this hasn't been threatened -- but Dave, I'm wondering how far I could push you. :) You know, friends in high places and all. :P

In the interests of not creating a ruckus, I won't try. Yet. :D

Enigma, I wasn't "back seat modding" This isn't the same topic reposted by a long shot, and I THINK JUST MAYBE I'm entitled to my opinion on what happens :P

Purple Robot Fish is the best thing ever. Man, just for you, I'm going to do a cool lead improv song for you bert, and call it "Purple Robot Fish".

Or I could play Morrowind. But I like, need to get up in the morning so maybe not XD

Rosie, do you know where that came from? I think you're pretty new here, relatively speaking, so I kinda doubt that you do... in case you don't, here it is:

It's simple, really. It's the punch line of a really funny birthday card I once got for my dad. On the outside, it says something like, "Have you ever noticed that as you get older, it gets harder and harder to understand the punchlines in birthday cards?" You open it, of course, and it simply says, "Purple Robot Fish."

I've sorta made it part of my mantra. I'm glad it gives you such great joy.

Don't mind me, just listening up on my Megadethand gettin' loaded after work!

Really hows the programing of practically the entire back catalogue of DT synth tones going Bert?

Bert

Well, I just did a little sampling of some sound effects, and did a lot of work on the most enormous orchestral sounds known to man this afternoon. We're continually checking one to two songs off the list each day, so I guess it's going well. If we continue at this pace, we'll be just about finished by the time we have to leave for Sweden. Thanks for asking! Now, go get more loaded, for me huh? I can't, I'm programming. :P

I wonder, do you have every program loaded onto the OASYS at any given time, only switching the order of the patches for every show's setlist or do you still have to load the programs separately from external HDs every time you do a new show?

I imagine to save HD space and time, it'd be easier to have the sounds in order on a per-song basis and save those as single files... while there's a Master load file that has all the external samples and such saved and loaded every time the system is started up. *All samples and keymaps needed are saved in the same place every time the Oasys is turned on so that it's like it becomes part of the ROM, and when you load sounds, the sounds are loaded as though it assumes the "rom sounds" you loaded are there.
At least that's how *I* would do it with such a dynamic setup on a nightly basis.

Zorbas

Yeah, I guessed it would be easier to upload one big file rather than switching around the patch order.

This is a humongous job and I sit here as the instrument is backing up files.
We plan on having all the programs and samples in the machine and just loading the particular Combinations I use for the setlist each night. Enigma has the right idea there. Once the prog and samples are in there the Combis will just point to them and everything should work out well.
I just packed up my Oasys production unit and sending it off to Europe tomorow to be there in time for rehearsal. It's back to the prototype for me!!

Goodnight everyone.

I, once again, find it sad that the man himself offers a concise explanation of the technicalities of our file system, and the best y'all can do is Beavis and Butthead. :D

I find it funny (or should I say "funnier?"), however, that Jordan accidentally posted as me... *in* "The Bert Thread." The planets are aligning now, ladies and gentlemen, and you're all in for a show. My high levels of Good Chi are mixing pleasantly with the oppression of the Programmathon 2005, making these next few months the best time of my life to turn into Thor and mightily wield my hammer in the highlands.

Just WHO do you think you ARE to stand in front of the God of Storms?!?!?! Take that! And That! And Southern Florida, you get THAT and THAT and THAT!!! and that.

I think I need to go to bed now. It's late, and I just drove for 3 and a half hours. Who'd a thunk that there'd be two lanes of rolling highway sweepers accompanied by 67 TRILLION FREAKING TRUCKS FLASHING THEIR GAY LITTLE YELLOW LIGHTS TAKING UP VALUABLE HIGHWAY SPACE, thereby causing the freakin' snarlup of the day there just after Bridgeport. And don't even get me started about Bridgeport, what with the bridge (get it?) being CONSTANTLY under construction.

Wow. I apologize in advance to the Unions, the Steel Workers of America, and the U.N. My statements were made under duress and the most late of circumstances, whereas my mind was a mildly formed wet sand in texture, and my energy level was approaching the consistency of split-pea soup. You know, the kind with the little chunks of ham in it. Yeah, that stuff. In any case, I plead insanity, with an option of not guilty later if things seem to be going my way.

Also funny is how I continue to type to the forum instead of going to bed.

I shall rectify that now. Good night to all, and to all a lovely PURPLE ROBOT FISH.

I had an interesting lead i was going to call "Bert", but it seems I didn't save it properly again. I'm still getting used to this incredibly weird OS even after a month or so. Shame :/

It really reminded me of Purple Robot Fish, too. I'll go make another weird lead tonight and record that improv.

When I will get my Wah pedal fixed, I will record PURPLE ROBOT FISH TWO: THE RED HERRING'S REVENGE.

Actually, a Purple Robot Fish might also have been an enemy in either a Sonic the Hedgehog or Megaman game. I'll have to check that out XD I'll put it as my forum avatar :O

Okay, imagine this. A fish, purple, Robotic. Under the sea. Deep blue ocean. Somewhere along the story, enters a deep cave with all kind of wobbly ins and outs, waters blowing in and out. Then a solo. Yay.

This is for you Bert! I call this Legacy of the Purple Robot Fish: Part I - Journey to the Cave of Deepness!

http://s35.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=0JONLGMTXJ4FE070LI8TWFMMMO

Yes, it's terrible. That's why it's only Part I XD When I'm doing more than expirementing with a tone I'll do better. Sorry about the EQ-sucking wah, it's designed for guitar before distortion really, I could have used it much better but I just got it fixed so I'm out of practice with it XD I much prefer foot-wah though.
