In the Smashing Pumpkins song "Stand Inside Your Love" there is a cool synth effect behind the verse and chorus that does some crazy stuff.
I dont know anywhere enough about synthesis to figure out how its done but I'm slowly trying to learn how to figure this stuff out.
I'm guessing it's a combination of patch settings along with some kind of real time effect (its not the same each time) but then I get lost... lol
Has anyone got any ideas? I dont want to copy it exactly, I just want to figure out how to get that type of effect so I can then figure out myself how to make it sound cool.
Thanks for any thoughts!

I would help, but I'm not familar with the song. Is there a snippet somewhere on the web we can listen to?

http://www.sonypictures.com/smashingpumpkins/ - Under music apparently it has the full version - all I get is script errors.
Amazon also have samples on their website (go to www.amazon.com (http://www.amazon.com) and type machina in the search) but you can't hear the synth part very clearly in the sample.
There's another bad sample on http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?style=MUSIC&pid=1033423&cart=161778764 which is a little clearer.
Can't find anything else...

The Smashing Pumpkins have never used anything too complicated. The Adore album used a lot of synth... I go to a Smashing Pumpkins board on occasion, I'll find it and edit in the URL later. They might know.

In both of those snippets ( Amazon and CD Baby) I'm hearing guitars with flangers that are causing a swooping sound, a little bit. It sounds to me like the guitars were tracked pretty clean, then one track was emersed in heavy flanging and mixed back fairly quietly so as not to damage the timbre of the clean guitar.
I'm not hearing any synth unless it's mixed way back in the mix. Maybe it happens somewhere else in the song?
I got a real player error at the SP home page too.

What you're hearing is not a synth. It's an E-Bow. It's a little guitar device that replaces a pick. You hold it over a string and the magnet in it vibrates the string indefinitely, giving it a very unique sound. It sounds like they're using some chorus, reverb, and slow flanging on it. You can hear it soloing around the 3:00 mark. It definitely has the WTF factor when you hear it or see it live.

Thanks guys - thats useful.
I figure the best bet is to try and create a similar sound for myself - I think I can figure it out.
Cheers
